Mission Statement

The Climate Reality Project’s mission is to catalyze a global solution to the climate crisis by making urgent action a necessity across every sector of society.

About This Cause

Over the past 16 years, Climate Reality has helped achieve historic wins to address climate change and environmental injustice, deploy clean energy, build more resilient and sustainable communities, protect critical ecosystems, and more through advocacy by its global network.   But the stark reality is that concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere continue to accumulate at a rapid rate. The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report makes clear that countries around the globe drastically need to cut emissions in half by 2030 to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of climate change. With this imperative at the forefront, Climate Reality developed a seven-year plan that focuses on 2030 as a key inflection point for reducing emissions to reach net zero by 2050. With growing levels of public acceptance that the climate is changing, there is a strong desire and need for actionable solutions.    Climate Reality Leadership Corps At the heart of Climate Reality’s work is our signature activist training program, the Climate Reality Leadership Corps, which recruits, trains, and mobilizes climate advocates across the world. Participants begin with a multi-day training on climate impacts and solutions personally led by former US Vice President Al Gore. After the training, these Climate Reality Leaders become “super-activists” who start or join Climate Reality chapters or branches, engage their local communities in the climate fight, enter government to drive forward climate policy, or take on climate leadership roles in their spheres of influence. Since 2006, Climate Reality has hosted 53 trainings worldwide and built a global network of nearly 50,000 Climate Reality Leaders. Branch and Chapter Programs Branch programs are set up in 11 strategic countries and regions to organize and mobilize Climate Reality Leaders and branch members to advance pro-climate policies and strengthen national and local commitments to action. Climate Reality chapters are vibrant local activist networks in the US that our trained Climate Reality Leaders and members of the public join in communities, cities, and colleges and universities, building support locally for clean energy solutions. Supported by our dedicated field team, branches and chapters identify impactful initiatives within their communities that build toward Climate Reality’s four global campaigns. Already, branches and chapters have become vital forces for progress, helping expand clean energy alternatives, tackling the legacy of fossil fuels in low-income communities, and pushing for a stronger Paris Agreement, to name just a few of the many ways they are making a difference. Reducing Emissions To achieve 2030 targets for cutting emissions, we must build support for rapid reductions in the burning of fossil fuels and for no additional fossil fuel development or funding. Climate Reality plans to increase the pressure on the fossil fuel industry and policymakers at a global level while also advocating for national policies and local actions that support a transition to clean energy in which impacted communities have a voice in the solution. We mobilize communities across the world to shut down current facilities and prevent new fossil fuel pipelines, power plants, and other fossil fuel infrastructure from being built, while also pushing for ambitious policies that drive the systems change we need. Financing a Just Transition At Climate Reality, we push governments and multilateral development banks (MDBs) like the World Bank to end support for fossil fuel projects and mobilize public and private finance to help Global South nations recover after disasters. It’s critical to speed a just transition to clean energy that provides workers and communities on the front lines of pollution and climate change with clean air, safe water, and a better future. We’re fighting for public investment in clean energy, fair and accessible credit for Global South nations, and a Loss and Damage Fund that delivers. Our branches, chapters, and broader network are mobilizing around both global and local actions to make sure it happens. Calling Out Greenwashing Climate Reality aims to expose and hold fossil fuel companies and their enablers responsible for greenwashing, including misinformation and mischaracterizations about their sustainability efforts. Fossil fuel interests have made billions changing our climate and threatening our planet while using multi-million-dollar ad campaigns to mislead us about their climate responsibility and commitments. Our greenwashing campaign highlights the misinformation fossil fuel companies spread and exposes the truth about their role in destroying our planet. We work in coalition with climate and environmental justice partners worldwide and with our branches in their fights to call out greenwashing from top emitters in their regions and push to end government subsidies for fossil fuel companies. Strengthening International Cooperation on Climate Climate Reality mobilizes communities worldwide to build the political will for the bold action we need, pressuring leaders to rapidly reduce emissions, honor their financial commitments, and work together to build a future without fossil fuels. We activate advocates and leaders across sectors to push for the most ambitious policies possible to phase out fossil fuels and get us to true net zero by 2050. Global leaders must be held accountable to their promises. For too long, fossil fuel interests have used outdated UN rules and processes to stall progress at COP summits and beyond. We're working for a new process that can effectively bring countries together to stop global warming and prevent climate catastrophe.
