Mission Statement

DignityMoves is a California-based nonprofit that works to end unsheltered homelessness in our communities by building Interim Supportive Housing communities with rapid, cost-effective, scalable solutions.

About This Cause

DignityMoves is a nonprofit real estate project developer founded by a group of concerned business leaders, determined to make an impact on the growing homelessness crisis. Using innovative solutions and disruptive thinking, DignityMoves builds interim housing communities using state-of-the-art prefabricated modular construction and partners with leading services agencies who will operate the sites and improve outcomes for the clients. The result is dignified interim supportive housing that can be built fast and cost effectively while our cities wait for more permanent supportive housing to be built. Most cities California are working diligently to build more permanent supportive housing, yet this costs over $700,000 per unit and takes many years to build. In San Francisco the average wait time is over 10 years. In the meantime, people are languishing and dying on our streets. Nearly 70% of people experiencing homelessness in California are unsheltered, residing in places not meant for human habitation. Our streets can’t be the waiting room. With our interim housing model, we can build units for $50,000 each on underutilized land in 3-6 months using the emergency building code. “Interim Supportive Housing” differs from traditional “shelters” in a number of ways. Rather than a bunk bed in a group setting, everyone gets the dignity of their own private space–with a door that locks. Most importantly, exceptional services agencies provide the wrap-around support necessary to help clients make positive steps forward: connecting them with mental and behavioral healthcare, employment and housing specialists, and a myriad of other critical resources. We use our extensive business skills and resources to build partnerships with local city and county governments, real estate owners, private philanthropy, and other nonprofits to make each site come together and succeed. DignityMoves is initially focused on the West Coast, but our “playbook” for how to build rapidly deployed, cost-effective interim housing sites is open source. We intend to replicate this model widely, and also assist others in utilizing it in their own communities.
