Mission Statement
RCUSA mobilizes expertise, ideas, and influence to protect the rights of forcibly displaced people and build more welcoming societies. We envision a just world in which people forced to flee their homes have agency, access to safety, and opportunity to thrive.
About This Cause
Refugee Council USA (RCUSA) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization headquartered in Washington, DC. RCUSA is an umbrella association of nearly forty U.S.-based nonprofits (including all ten national refugee resettlement agencies), all of which support and protect the rights of forcibly displaced people. RCUSA serves our member organizations by provided platforms for coordinating advocacy, strategic communications, and programmatic work. Since 2000, we have served as the only national coalition devoted to forcibly displaced people in the United States. As a thought leader and convener, we advance collective learning and action to respond to displacement crises, transform humanitarian systems, and help affected communities thrive. RCUSA's Strategic Goals for 2023-2027 are: 1) to improve and expand resettlement, asylum, humanitarian protection, and inclusion for forcibly displaced populations; 2) to strengthen the collective power and effectiveness of RCUSA members and partners in delivering responsive, equity-focused policies and programs and driving systemic change; and 3) to enhance the role of forcibly displaced people as leaders, experts, and advocates to influence policies, programs, and perceptions. RCUSA operates through a set of standing member-led committees, sub-committees, and working groups that drive our strategic goals. Committees and working groups lead initiatives on high priority issues, advise on effective, equity-oriented policies, and leverage knowledge and expertise to ensure excellence in U.S. refugee resettlement, humanitarian protection, and crisis response. RCUSA's Policy Center serves as a hub for member dialogue, programmatic initiatives, and policy research and development. The Policy Center supports committee and working group efforts and fuels long-term systemic change. RCUSA regularly participates in high-level meetings with US government officials, and in international events such as the Global Refugee Forum and the annual Consultations on Resettlement and Complementary Pathways. RCUSA is a core partner in the US Refugee Advisory Board (established in 2022), which brings the expertise of persons with lived experience of forced displacement to the national and international policy arena. RCUSA and partners are piloting a pioneering refugee integration self-assessment tool aimed at improving measures of integration outcomes. And RCUSA continues to work toward enabling inclusive and representative leadership across our coalition members, board and staff.
