Mission Statement

Seva Health Center for Well-being is a 501c3 nonprofit providing an integrative approach to supporting brain (mental) health.

About This Cause

At Seva Health, we work both one-on-one and in group settings to offer mental health coaching, mind-body coaching, and education In addition, we provide hands on training and evidence- based services that improve whole person health. Our approach includes supporting mental health through diet, exercise, stress management, education, and mind-body techniques. We understand that health is not one size fits all and we strive to meet individuals where they are at on their journey. Our programs are crafted to fit each individual or organizations needs. Seva Health Center for Well-being is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving Northeast Iowa. Our founder, Jessica has 20 plus years experience working in healthcare in a variety of different settings including family practice, women's health, philanthropy, community education, and health coaching. Jessica is a Nationally Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach and holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology along with multiple health, fitness, and mind-body certifications. Jessica has worked side-by-side licensed behavioral health counselors to help patients improve their lives through nutrition, exercise, and mindfulness practices. She also has 10 years’ experience in conducting Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNA) and development of Health Implementation Plans (HIP) for two critical access hospitals. She has extensive knowledge in the Triple Aim, Social Determinants of Health (SDoH), population health, and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES). Seva Health has impacted over 1,000 community members throughout Northeast Iowa and continues to grow programs that provide wrap around services in order to strengthen families. Resources at Seva increase individuals knowledge of self-care and provide a safe place to develop coping skills that can be used throughout the entire lifespan. Our summer program provides students with support during the months when they no longer have access to school resources. This program fills a necessary need in rural communities. A recent local survey, indicated that 53% of individuals in a multi-county service area stated their biggest barrier to improving their mental health is a “Lack of resources beyond the clinical setting.” Additionally, 43% responded that a “Lack of knowledge to make changes in their health” was also a barrier to improving quality-of-life. Individuals experiencing mental illness are often prescribed medication and engage in talk therapy, however effective lifestyle changes such as nutrition, physical activity, and mindfulness practices are not always recommended by their provider. Or if they are recommended, patients don’t always know how to integrate these changes into their lives. Therapy simply cannot reach everyone. A lack of therapist means patients are put on waiting list and sometimes do not ever receive support. A lack of therapists is a problem that is not solvable overnight, thus creating the need for innovative approaches. Therapist are not always well trained in evidence-based integrative practices, nor do they have the time to work with patients to develop the skills. Programs at Seva Health help to fill these needs as they provide access to resources beyond the clinical setting and education to support behavior change. Lack of knowledge and resources beyond the clinical setting prevent patients from ever adopting practices that have been scientifically proven to be effective in reducing the effects of stress, anxiety, and depression. Patients will likely head home and never attempt to implement changes in diet, exercise, or mind-body practices. That is where Seva Health comes in to play. Our programs provide individuals, families, and children with knowledge and support to improve quality-of-life. Participants in our programs learn and develop coping skills that can ease the effects of stress, anxiety, and depression. Seva Health believes in a person and family-centered approach. By doing so, individuals and families are supported and connected to additional resources. We know that individuals struggle to make changes beyond clinical appointments and that root causes of inequities are not always taken into account by providers when recommending treatment plans. Seva strives to provide an innovative approach to support families and help them to be successful in their living environment. We support individual of all ages, races, and genders throughout Northeast Iowa with the ability to support families state-wide. Seva Health has developed strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders including the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, Clayton County Foundation for the Future, and like organizations. Recently, Seva co-founded a Clayton County Brain Health Coalition that is comprised of 40 members from area organizations including law enforcement, education, healthcare, and youth who are passionate about mental health. The coalition is actively working on goals for education, connecting to resources, and awareness.Seva Health offers a variety of integrative healthful services including yoga, Yoga Nidra, meditation, restorative yoga, health education, and brain health coaching. We also provide coaching to students who have been diagnosed with learning disabilities such as ADHD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Nonverbal Learning Disorder to help improve their quality-of-life. This includes guiding students to set goals to improve organization, time management, impulsivity, and self-confidence. Our programs are structured to fit into both one-on-one coaching, group classes, and in classrooms. We believe that everyone regardless of age should have access to support. Connecting with a coach at Seva Health provides individuals with social support and access to education to help make informed decisions about lifestyle change. This unique approach, links families to resources that create a supportive treatment plan suggested by a provider into the overall wellness plan for the individual. Support through programs at Seva Health can aid individuals to build resilience to stress, decrease risk of disease, and improve overall health. Individuals, families and children who utilize a coach at Seva have the opportunity to look at their whole life including their eating habits, exercise, sleep, stress, and even finances. The coach and client co-create a plan and set goals that the client chooses. By allowing the client to be in the driver seat, this sets them up for success by developing self-efficacy and building skills. The goal of the coaching program is to remove barriers to improving quality-of-life. Individuals are introduced to the program by their providers, school counselors or teachers, or can be self referred. Education is provided in schools and open to community members. These sessions include education on stress management, healthy eating, exercise, and parent training. We believe that the success of a child is determined on their home environment and parental relationships. Therefore, we strive to support not just the child, but also their entire family. The program is open to any individual of any age and their individual journey is created based on their needs and desires for change. Our brain health coaching provides an interconnecting role between the patient and the provider. Most healthcare professionals do not have time for actual coaching sessions. Relying on coaches to bridge this gap allows for a greater impact on overall wellness. The coach assists their clients with organization, accountability, medical adherence to appointments, and medication management. Additionally, the coach serves as a guide to the patient to help the patient better understand treatment plans and increase self-efficacy in making changes or advocating for their own healthcare needs. Together, the coach and client explore Knowledge of health challenges, treatment plans suggested by providers, and the ability to engage in self-care along with connecting to additional resources. “Seva” means “Self-less service through contributing to the improvement of the community.” At Seva Health, we are passionately driven and community focused. Seva Health serves as the catalyst to improved health by offering supplemental support and bridging the gap between the patient and provider. Additionally, providing education on brain health to students will help strengthen their ability to cope as adults. At Seva Health, our values include; Empathy- the ability to see, hear, and feel what others see, hear, and feel. Nonjudgement- meeting every individual where they are on their wellness journey without judgement. Community- building connections that improve community health. Selflessness- putting our patients and community members before our own needs. When it comes to the “why” of Seva Health, our founder, Jessica has a personal mission. A year ago, Jessica received a phone call from her teenage son. He was in distress and he told her he was considering taking his life. At the time of the call, he was driving in his car and his plan was to wreck. Luckily, Jessica was able to talk him into pulling over until she could get there to help him. This was the beginning of a long journey through depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Her son started counseling and taking medication; however, it took almost a year to find an effective medication and over a month to find a therapist. That is when Jessica decided enough is enough. From that day forward, she set out to do more than just talk about mental health. By connecting with a coach at Seva, youth and families can learn coping skills and develop goals that could improve their lives.
