Mission Statement
SIDEKICKS Academy’s mission is to support and encourage students, particularly students of color, academically, socially, and emotionally, and prevent inter-peer violence by combining martial arts principles like respect, focus, and self-confidence with intentional and sustained mentorship.
About This Cause
SIDEKICKS Academy, Inc. Overview and Purpose Durham County’s communities of color are in desperate need of a program that will provide its youth with opportunities to succeed. Therefore, SIDEKICKS Academy is working to stand in that gap by committing to reducing disparities among some of Durham County’s most marginalized communities and strengthening the leadership qualities in Durham Public Schools’ Black and brown students impacted by the realities of community violence, trauma, and homelessness. Established in 2019, in Durham Public Schools, SIDEKICKS stands for Students Involved in Discipline Education, Keyed Into Claiming Knowledge and Success, and is an Academic, behavioral, Mental health and intervention program that takes the principles of academic success, respect, and social justice, and combines them with the teaching of the basic skills of the Korean martial art of Taekwondo. SIDEKICKS Academy’s ongoing efforts and dedication to collaborating with Durham’s Burton Elementary, Fayetteville Street, R.N. Harris, and C.C. Spaulding Elementary Schools have already greatly positively impacted their boys and girls of color. As a result of the Academy, schools have seen increased parent and community engagement in student support and school events, and teachers have noticed a reduction in aggressive behaviors, improved academic performance, and improved attendance rates of SIDEKICKS Academy participants. SIDEKICKS Academy staff work to reduce the frequency of, prevent, or mitigate the need for de-escalation interventions by employing a therapeutic framework that draws from Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Multicultural Therapy (MCT), Person-centered Therapy (PCT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Systems and Family Therapy to: ● Address challenging behaviors ● Promote participants’ positive self-image ● Promote developmental transitions ● Promote self-actualization ● Enhance emotional self-regulation ● Meet students where they are ● Provide trauma-informed engagement ● Develop and enhance student insight ● Enhance student strengths and resilience ● Enhance positive student relationships ● Faster student success goals ● Develop and promote foresight
