Mission Statement
The Sandy Point Neighborhood Association was founded in 2021 to represent the interests of neighborhood residents and businesses in order to maintain and improve the quality of life within our Sandy Point neighborhood and whose board is entrusted to represent the common interests of the membership.
About This Cause
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR NEIGHBORHOOD: The Sandy Point Neighborhood is located in the southeastern corner of West Haven. On the one hand, the neighborhood is home to one of the most spectacular natural areas on the east coast, with its beautiful beachfront/barrier beach and its surrounding marshes that support recreational opportunities for residents and provide a home for a wide variety of rare shore birds. Residents of the area also represent a rich mix of racial and ethnic backgrounds. On the other hand, portions of the neighborhood have been severely damaged by tropical storms that have eliminated almost all of the commercial development along Beach Street and resulted in the removal of over 50 homes located within the adjacent floodplain. The neighborhood has become somewhat socio-economically distressed as well. Income levels and education levels tend to be lower than for the city as a whole, and real estate values are one of the lowest in the city. There are certain locations in the neighborhood that are prone to illegal dumping, and it is common to see streets and parks in the area littered. Some streets have become speedways for passing beach goers. A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR ASSOCIATION: In 2021, a group of residents decided it was time for a change. The Sandy Point Neighborhood Association was formed to maintain and improve the quality of life within the Neighborhood and, as a result, the rest of the City of West Haven as well. In its early years, the Association has become a voice of action for the neighborhood. So far, the Association has: 1. Sponsored over a dozen monthly cleanups at different locations, each drawing an average of 20 volunteers or more. The Association's efforts are presented under its "Clear Blue Clean Green" initiative which seeks to recover litter and plastics that threaten the ecology of the area and Long Island Sound itself. The Association provides trash bags, gloves, and trash pickers for those who need them. Bottled water and light refreshments are offered at each cleanup for the volunteers. The Association has focused on visible sites, such as the Bird Sanctuary, Morse Park, Beach Street, the Boardwalk, and the April Street Boat Ramp. (An important aspect of these cleanups is to also educate other residents and encourage them to take steps to keep the area cleaned up.) 2. Supported the continued maintenance of the Sandy Point Bird Sanctuary which was once a barren, trash-ridden public parking lot, and has actively supported efforts of the Audubon Society to attract birders near and far to enjoy this unique facility. 3. Served as an advocate for public projects proposed in the neighborhood, offering constructive input on the design of city projects such as the Beach Street Road Elevation expected in 2023, the Land Trust Coastal project near the Boardwalk in 2023/24, and the proposed Audubon Coastal Resiliency Center by 2024/2025. 4. Held two significant social events, an annual Summer Barbecue in June 2022 and a Winter Solstice Holiday Party in December 2022. (Developing positive, lasting relationships among residents and their neighbors is another important aspect of the Association's work.) 5. Communicated with its members in a number of ways. The Association has created a website at www.sandypointneighbors.org, which provides information on Association programs and priorities and maintains a calendar of events. Additionally, members are notified of important issues through email updates. Additional publicity occurs through frequent press releases and postings on social media platforms (Facebook, etc.) 6. Formed four active committees to further the progress of the Association (Beautification, Events, Neighborhood Safety, and Publicity and Membership.) The Association seeks to foster leadership in the neighborhood and "leads by example." 7. The Association is now focused on fostering a new vision to use as a roadmap for rebuilding the neighborhood, in partnership with the City of West Haven, its elected leadership and its departments. The effort will focus on supporting economic recovery from the devastation of the Sandy Super Storm flooding. Other key goals include increasing safety for pedestrians and bikers, involving schools, and, hopefully, revitalizing Morse Park as a recreational centerpiece for the area. Further information on Association initiatives can be found at : "Initiatives" (www.sandypointneighbors.org) The Sandy Point Neighborhood Association Inc gained its 501(c)(3) non-profit status in 2023. As a result, donations to the Association are now tax-deductible. Our entire board as well as our committees serve on a volunteer basis. All donations go directly to projects to improve our neighborhood. The Association needs funds to further its work, as well as volunteers to serve on committees and support events and activities. Please join us in making Sandy Point a remarkable neighborhood in which to live and thrive.
