Mission Statement
It is our belief homeless animals deserve a better life. No animal should be abused, neglected or abandoned, spending its existence in fear, pain and hunger, but instead, should be able to live a life filled with love and compassion. To achieve our belief, it is our mission to reunite lost pets with their guardians, to assist homeless pets find caring homes, to provide information to enhance the relationships between people and animals, and to support the Tehama County Animal Care center in its endeavors.
About This Cause
SPOT is a result of efforts initiated in 2021 to address the needs of The Tehama County Animal Care Center (TCACC), an underfunded, small aging public facility containing only 47 dog and 20 cat kennels. TCACC’s yearly intake is approximately 1,600 dogs and 500 cats, whose average length of stay is 14 days for dogs and 29 days for cats. In 2024, TCACC took in 2,338 animals. Tehama County is 2,962 square miles with a population of 63,463, 20 % of which live below the poverty level. SPOT receives no federal or local funding; all operating costs come from donations or fundraising efforts. SPOT is 100% run by dedicated volunteers to ensure all monies raised can directly influence the health and well-being of as many homeless animals as is possible. Everyone involved with SPOT feels strongly that pets are a lifetime commitment and are deserving of a safe and loving home. They unanimously feel that pets can help make us better people, and have the ability to strengthen the family unit. As an indirect result, they also believe, communities are improved and the world becomes a healthier, more pleasant place to live. SPOT also understands that in order to transform the unfortunate lives of animals, they must also address and find solutions to the causes of abandonment, relinquishment, and neglect. Finding answers for a multitude of animal issues is never easy. Nevertheless, the organization firmly believes cumulative small steps in the right direction can eventually solve seemingly unsurmountable large problems. By improving the relationship between people and companion pets, the quality of life for all improves and the chances of pet retention in the home increases. To support responsible pet ownership SPOT provides educational materials to introduce the higher ideals of compassion toward pets and people, and to promote the control of pet over-population. Through its social media outlets, website, news column, and community awareness events, SPOT serves as a pet-care resource for community members, addressing concerns and providing pertinent information as needed. The public, including local youths, are encouraged to volunteer with the organization and work together to achieve its goal. The intent is to empower individuals to stand up for the humane treatment of animals. The organization has always been about doing the right thing for animals who cannot speak for themselves. SPOT gives the animals a voice. For everyone involved, each adoption into a loving home represents victory. For each spay and neuter done, another generation of unwanted animals is prevented. For every individual reached with lessons of compassion and caring for the animals, another chance to end abuse and cruelty occurs. SPOT’ efforts not only help many of the community’s creatures but also build strong alliances of people who care about animals.
