Mission Statement
Ready for Good exists to prepare youth for the future who are making the difficult transition to adulthood while growing up in, or having grown up in, the foster care and/or juvenile justice systems, and homeless youth, aged 14-26 years old, through job readiness training, paid work experience, life skills education, life coaching, and mentorship.
About This Cause
Ready for Good operates a nonprofit social enterprise furniture store, unlike any other social enterprise in the country. We run a nonprofit furniture store where at-risk youth learn, and put into practice, important job and life skills that will transfer to any future job. Youth learn and participate in all aspects of the furniture store business. They partake in workshops that teach them important skills, then get on the job training practicing the hard and soft skills trained in the workshops. The skills we teach are the top skills employers are looking for, such as positive attitude and enthusiasm, teamwork, taking initiative, detail orientation, endurance/grit, and others. Youth assemble new furniture, restore donated furniture, greet customers, run the register, merchandise, go on deliveries/donation pickups, and generally have fun working with supportive staff and volunteers. During our job readiness program, youth also take the Strengths Finder 2.0, and DeBruce Foundation Agilities skills assessments, which are worked into a resume draft. Youth develop appreciations for two key mindsets for success in life and work--the next action mindset, and the growth mindset--and two master keys for professional and personal growth--networking and communication literacy. Lastly, youth consider the importance of following their personal bread crumbs in life, on an unfolding journey of learning, hoping, and progressing towards a productive and meaningful future. Graduates of our programs are given transition-coaching from a certified life coach, trained specifically to work with at-risk youth, and are connected to jobs and internships at partner businesses and corporations.
