About This Cause

At the heart of SUSU is our dedication to reconnecting people with the àṣẹ (life force energy), healing, medicine, and stories embedded in our traditional land and foodways. We create a sanctuary in Vermont, a home for Black people, particularly Black womanist leaders, to rest, build community, and hold each other through life’s challenges. Through the reclamation of our cultural and spiritual practices, we create new traditions that foster collective care and locate our belonging in multiracial community. Our work is centered around five core pillars: Food Sovereignty: Ensuring access to culturally relevant, nourishing, and medicinal food for our community. Land & Climate Resilience: Building a sustainable farm landscape and farming practices rooted in Afro-Indigenous ecological knowledge. Cultural Healing & Community Well-being: Offering educational and healing spaces for ancestral reconnection, cultural reclamation, healing from racialized trauma, and collective liberation rooted in reciprocity. No Rushed Solutions: we recognize the necessity of space for exploration and experimentation. Our commitment lies in fostering an environment where patience, learning, reflection, curiosity, wonder, and openness can thrive in safety and community. genuine collective healing and reclamation require discovering, uncovering, and recovering practices and solutions with deep, reliable roots. Liberatory Organizational Culture and Practices: we seek to set new precedents for what it means to care for and center the people who work for SUSU. we intend to create internal structures that interrupt the conventional extractive concepts and practices of labor and instead create internal systems that support and nurture the thrivance of those sharing our efforts most directly. Through these pillars, we cultivate localized cultural strategies anchored in Afro-Indigenous legacies and traditions, empowering communities to build, create, dream, and lead purposeful lives enriched by Black womanist principles and teachings. We are part of a broader ecosystem of change, working to foster interconnected networks that cultivate deeply needed cultural spaces and transform the conditions that prevent community well-being, nourishment, and healing.
