Mission Statement
To establish the Promise Village Academy in the Simanjiro/Manyara district of Central Tanzania to reduce generational poverty and create a vibrant, healthy community.
About This Cause
Promise Village Academy (PVA) serves over 190 Maasai children -- Pre-School thru 4th grade, adding a grade each year. The school children are from impoverished families and at school receive 2 nutritious meals and a snack each day to help prevent stunted growth and malnutrition. Promise Village Academy (PVA) draws students from 6 villages, that like PVA, are approximately 90 miles south of Arusha, Tanzania. This part of Tanzania has access to minimal governmental services & as a result the life expectancy for Maasai is 44 years for women & 42 years for men. Few medical services are available in the area & the population consumes very poor quality water. Water is drawn from two surface lakes, lakes where wild animals often bath and defecate. It is estimated that 7,000 to 9,000 people live in these villages so with only 190 students, PVA is serving only some of the children in the greater community. Although illegal in Tanzania, in this region, Maasai allow each man to have multiple wives and the practice of FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION/CUTTING (FGM) is common (58% of girls are subjected to FGM). Another alarming statistic is that 52% of the girls that grow up in the Manyara District experience at least one teenage pregnancy. We cannot force change upon them however if the children are educated they will modernize and begin to understand that females should be treated equally and with respect.
