Mission Statement

CityWorks DC’s mission is to dramatically improve the early career outcomes of DC youth and young adults of color by creating innovative programs and by mobilizing employers, educators, and city leaders to create a local, diverse talent pipeline.

About This Cause

CityWorks DC wants all young people – especially those from historically marginalized groups and/or those who grow up in low-income households – to achieve the “social mobility trifecta”: industry-valued credentials (degrees and certificates); relevant, paid work experience; and social capital in order to compete for and secure the high-demand, high-wage jobs in the DC Metro region. To accomplish this, CityWorks DC seeks to catalyze a more equitable education-to-employment system by pursuing both programmatic and systems-level change. First, our innovative programs reimagine how high school, postsecondary, and regional employers should work together to prepare and train DC youth and young adults for high-wage, high-demand jobs. Second, we engage in systems-level initiatives designed to create the citywide conditions needed to ensure the District’s youth of color are prepared for, hired into, and successful in those jobs. We do this by strategically convening and engaging local leaders across sectors to collaborate on advancing citywide goals and efforts to accelerate the development of an employer-driven, equitable, local talent pipeline. CityWorks DC operates four youth- and young-adult-facing programs that aim to serve as proof points for providing young people in DC with multiple pathways to family-sustaining careers and choice-filled lives. Each of these programs focuses on different aspects of improving career outcomes, including modern youth apprenticeships that begin in high school, career coaching and support for recent high school graduates, wraparound supports for adult apprentices, and affordable and highly supportive college. At the same time, CityWorks DC is leading three strategic initiatives that work to create the enabling conditions for system reform through policy, coalition-building, data systems, and advocacy. These initiatives bring together local government, business, philanthropy, and nonprofit leaders and partners to change the systems needed to ensure the District’s youth of color are prepared for, hired into, and successful in the region’s high-wage, high-demand jobs.
