Mission Statement

The Alameda Post serves the community by reporting current news and information, promoting community groups, diversity, and cultural awareness, and preserving Alameda’s history for future generations.

About This Cause

The Alameda Post is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, digital-only local news site focused on providing accurate, fact-based reporting on the diverse city of Alameda, CA. Our mission is to meet the local news and information needs of the 75,000 people who call our San Francisco Bay city home. We started publishing at the end of 2021 because we feared Alameda could become a news desert. Previously the community had been served by two weekly papers; one is part of a regional chain owned by a hedge fund that has no involvement in or coverage of the community, while the other went out of business at the end of 2023. We publish several articles daily, with a focus on local government, housing and development, arts and culture, and other items about goings-on in the 94501 and 94502 zip codes. Most of the stories we cover are not covered by anyone else. Since we launched, we’ve seen our website traffic grow slowly but steadily to between 45,000 and 50,000 unique visitors per month. In addition to our website, we have a weekly email newsletter with 3,500 subscribers, and our weekly podcast, the AlamedaPostCast, is Alameda's only news podcast. Our ongoing Alameda history walking tours, led by Dennis Evanosky, educate and inform our residents about our community's rich history. Our content is available to thousands more via Apple News, Google News, NewsBreak, SmartNews, and from our social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Threads, Nextdoor, BlueSky, Reddit, and YouTube. Our goal is to bring Alameda news wherever people look for their news. We host Alameda's only centralized online community calendar, with the backing of local business associations. In 2023, we were named 'Best Community Partner' by the Alameda Chamber and Economic Alliance. We sponsor local community events and organizations including Rhythmix Cultural Works, Alameda's Fourth of July Parade, The Foodbank Players, The Alameda Museum, Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter, and Alameda Pride. As Alameda's only local news source, we depend on the support of our readers and other benefactors to bring Alameda news that would otherwise go unreported.
