About This Cause

Background: The Crisis Call Center was established as an outreach program of the University of Nevada, Reno in 1966 in response to the high rate of suicide in Nevada. Working with Northern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services, a plan was created to establish a 24-hour suicide prevention hotline through the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. In the first few months of operations, the need for this service proved to be so great; it was expanded to include support for any persons in any type of crisis. In 1979, the Center again expanded its service by adding an advocacy program for victims of sexual assault. The Crisis Call Center became an independent non-profit agency in 1985. Over the years, the Center has continued to grow and evolve in response to community needs. The Center has expanded its services to address other crisis situations, such as domestic violence, substance abuse, bullying, and child/elder abuse or neglect. We are very proud to say that the Crisis Call Center is one of the longest continuously-operating crisis intervention centers in the country. The Center is now one of ten national call centers for the Lifeline Suicide Prevention Helpline. The Crisis call Center has saved thousands of lives in the last 50 years. Volume and topics covered: The Crisis Call Center answers crisis phone calls, crisis texts, and calls to our Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS), 24/7/365. Last year, we were contract over 65,000 times (average about 178 contacts per day); with 15,500 of those contacts being by text message by mostly youth under 18 years of age. Topics covered in these contacts included suicide prevention, mental health, physical health, basic needs, family and relationship stressors, bullying, and non-suicidal self harming behavior, such as eating disorders and cutting. We specialize in crisis intervention, including the development of a safety plan to keep the caller or texter safe in the moment. Many people need information and resource referrals during this crisis intervention, and many just need someone to listen to them in a difficult moment. We at the Crisis Call Center are honored that people turn to us when they are in crisis and need. All services are free of charge.
