About This Cause

Community Spotlight: The Shade Tree The Shade Tree has been serving Southern Nevada for 35 years, providing hope and strength to women and children facing crisis. Over the years, Shade Tree has become the largest shelter of its kind in the state, and the only 24-hour accessible shelter designed specifically to meet the needs of women and children in Southern Nevada. With 364 permanent beds, The Shade Tree provides safe shelter to more than 6,000 women and children annually. Our doors are open to any woman, with or without children, and male and female unaccompanied youth who lack a safe, adequate place to live. From the moment they take that first step of courage to enter the shelter, they are guided on a path to help regain their dignity and identity, while escaping the cycle of homelessness or violence. Though the core mission of The Shade Tree is to provide safe shelter, the organization also provides additional programs and services to assist with recovery and healing. How we are Making a Difference All individuals residing at Shade Tree can participate in the shelters unique programming, which includes: Emergency Shelter- a 24/7 safe place for women & children in crisis to stay (up to 90 days) and receive assistance with all basic needs as well as referrals to other agencies. Transitional Housing- provides single clients and families with additional time (up to 2 years) to access other programs and/or stabilize on their own. Life Skills- Classes designed to provide life skill education that leads to self-sufficiency. Classes help motivate the women to develop confidence and provide the necessary tools to meet life-challenges. Classes offered range from budgeting, time management, math, fitness, conflict resolution, etc. Over 100 classes are offered each month. Job Development- Fourteen (14) core classes are offered covering all aspects of job searching skills including work values, skills identification, time management, goal setting, affirmations, barriers to employment success, work ethics discussion, and mock interviews. This program helps prepare women to enter or re-enter the job market at a self-sustaining wage. Healthcare- The on-site Stallman Touro Clinic provides basic health care services for shelter residents that include acute medical care, management of chronic illness, women’s health, and the health of children. Survivor Services- When many of the women arrive at The Shade Tree, they are often mentally traumatized, physically injured, and/or emotionally abused. The Survivors Service Center (SSC) provides safety, basic needs, educational resources and support services that enable survivors to envision and develop a foundation for a brighter future, for them and their children. Mental Health Service Coordination- Mental Health Service Coordination is provided by an experienced mental health staff member addressing mental health issues presented by our clients, making referrals to other community agencies as needed and serving as liaison to community based mental health programs. Noah’s Animal House- located on the campus of The Shade Tree, Noah’s provides a safe haven for the pets of the clients who seek shelter. Many of our residents face serious health problems, hunger, and financial difficulties. They are insecure, fearful, angry, desperate, and hopeless. Many deal with the loss of a family member, a residence, and employment. They have lost hope and purpose in life. They have no place to turn other than a shelter. The Shade Tree shelter is a beacon of hope for these individuals and our programs help them to improve their quality of life.
