About This Cause
Communities In Schools of Nevada, with three nationally accredited affiliates in Southern Nevada, Northeastern Nevada and Western Nevada, serves Clark County, Elko County and Washoe County. CIS of Nevada has been working to address Nevada's dropout crisis since 2004. We are a leading champion of connecting at-risk students with critically needed community resources to help meet students' basic needs and provide them with the necessary tools for succeeding in school and preparing for their future. CIS of Nevada collaborates with the public school system and over 100 community- based service providers statewide. The CIS model is a proven program for improving students' academic and social preparedness for success in education beyond high school. Within our evidence-driven service model, CIS of Nevada places trained site coordinators in schools to address children's unmet needs, linking students to supportive community resources, such as health care services, mental health care, academic tutoring, and basic needs such as clothing and food. CIS of Nevada provides services based upon assessments of the needs of the school at large, as well as the needs of individual students. Our holistic, integrated approach relieves the social service burden placed on schools so that teachers are free to teach and students are able to learn. Through the critical services provided and coordinated by CIS of Nevada, the entire culture and environment of the school campus is improved, while the highest risk students receive focused case management services to help ensure their individual success and subsequent graduation from high school. As a result, students provided with the CIS model graduate at a higher rate and proceed to the next grade level more often than the school district average.
