Mission Statement
OGR undertakes to rescue, rehabilitate, and provide a permanent home for horses, specifically, and such others as may be at risk or in urgent need, up to a limit determined by grazing acreage and available resources. OGR will offer permanent sanctuary and care to otherwise unwanted, abused or neglected horses, and provide them with a safe haven where they will never again experience the situations that led them to OGR in the first place. Horses will typically be acquired through owner surrender, transfer from other rescue organizations, or in rare instances where the welfare of a horse requires it, purchased through private sale, livestock sales, or auctions. These animals are generally older and, in some cases, traumatized and will be maintained as permanent sanctuary residents. Therefore, our motto is “No More Bad Days.” A secondary purpose of OGR is to identify situations where horses and other large animals have adequate shelter and grazing, but the owners cannot afford proper nutrition, farrier and veterinary care. In these circumstances, OGR (when resources allow) will provide needed services with the intent of leaving the horses in place. In return, OGR will seek permission to periodically evaluate the horses and their living conditions. The third purpose of OGR is to inform the public of our mission in a manner that will garnish their support. OGR will solicit donations and grants from individuals and organizations. Donations collected are used for sheltering, feeding, treating, caring, and otherwise maintaining the animals. OGR will also attempt to raise awareness of issues affecting horses and will encourage long-term sponsorship for the care and support of individual animals. OGR is non-profit 501(c)3 organization and all funds and donations are applied towards the care and maintenance of animals under the care of OGR. Horses housed at OGR are accommodated at On Golden Ranch in Birkenfeld, Oregon. These animals will never be sold or otherwise disposed of, in any way contrary to ethical and humane rescue practice.
About This Cause
About On Golden Rescue On Golden Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation committed to the rescue, rehabilitation and sanctuary of at-risk horses and other large animals such as goats. OGR offers permanent sanctuary and care to otherwise unwanted, abused, or neglected horses, and provides them with a safe haven where they will never again experience the situations that led them to OGR in the first place. NO MORE BAD DAYS is our motto. Introduction Each year there are approximately 200,000 unwanted horses across the United States. The reasons why a horse may be unwanted vary, in some cases owners cannot or will not provide adequate medical care for health concerns, horses may not be suitable for their intended purpose and thus lose their economic value, or their owners simply may not be able to care for them anymore. All too often the result is that horses are left neglected, or in the worst-case scenario, abused. Most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this reality. The Equine Welfare Data Collective has documented a rise in animal surrenders during the COVID-19 pandemic. And while that number is beginning to decline to pre-COVID levels, their most recent report indicated a worrying trend of increased law enforcement confiscations of neglected or abused animals. There is a growing need for organizations that can fill the gap in care for unwanted, neglected, or abused horses across the United States. Horses, and other animals, emerging from such situations often require extensive veterinary attention and behavioral rehabilitation to restore their health and well-being. It is within this context that the vision of On Golden Rescue was founded. Located on 14 beautiful acres in coastal mountain range of Oregon, On Golden Rescue seeks to fulfill a mission to rescue and rehabilitate neglected or abused equines in the Pacific Northwest, providing them with the opportunity for a brighter and more dignified future. On Golden Rescue's Approach On Golden Rescue (OGR), is a Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) accredited sanctuary and rehabilitation center for equines and goats that come from a variety of situations—some come from neglected or abused backgrounds, some are homeless, and others are simply old and no longer “of value” to the owner. OGR provides them with the care and kindness they desperately need and a place for them to live out the rest of their lives in peace and comfort. Our services include: • Permanent Sanctuary - We rescue, rehabilitate, and care for unwanted, abused, or neglected horses and goats. We provide them with the veterinary, farrier, and nutrition care that they need to become healthy again, and a safe haven where they will never again experience the situations that led them to OGR in the first place. Current residents include 10 miniature horses and donkeys, 6 standard horses and 4 goats. • Community Outreach – OGR identifies situations where horses and other large animals have adequate shelter and grazing, but the owners cannot afford proper nutrition, farrier, and veterinary care. In these circumstances, OGR provides needed services with the intent of leaving the horses in place. • Disaster Preparedness – OGR is a member of the Regional Disaster Preparedness Organization (RDPO) and works with regional animal welfare agencies to coordinate responses and resources in emergencies. We make sure there is always a way for pet and livestock owners to safely evacuate, seek shelter and eventually return to their homes. OGR provides both transportation, temporary shelter and full care for these animals. • Animal Technical Rescue – OGR, in partnership with the local fire department, responds to animals that are trapped, stuck in the mud, fallen into a creek or other situation where animals need to be rescued. We have specialized training and equipment and are certified through the state of California to provide these services. What makes OGR unique is our comprehensive approach to animal welfare. Out of the 226 Large Animal Rescues (Sanctuaries) in Oregon, only 4, including OGR, are GFAS accredited. rescues. We uphold the highest standards of care at our facilities. The rigorous GFAS certification process ensures sanctuaries like ours meet the highest standards of care, training for staff, professionalism, safety, disaster and evacuation plans, and financial management. As such, our services go beyond what most sanctuaries are able to provide. Additionally, our facilities are environmentally friendly, using solar and rain catchment systems to reduce carbon emissions, conserve water, practice eco-appropriate manure management, and preserve biodiversity. We’ve built on this expertise to also support our community outside of our sanctuary. Our disaster preparedness and response work provide critically needed assistance to animals and animal owners affected by disaster. Research shows that households with animals are almost twice as likely to not evacuate during an emergency than those without pets. By providing the transportation, shelter, and care for evacuated animals, we ensure that both animals and animal owners can evacuate safely. On Golden Rescue's Impact On Big boy Jericho, a 21-year-old Tobiano gelding, had a long journey to OGR. For years, Jericho worked as a working rescue horse and licensed first responder in California. After an injury, though, he was written off and sent to auction. A gentleman there recognized him from a newspaper article and bought him. In a tragic turn of events, his owner was diagnosed with cancer and decided to give Jericho to two young women trying to create their own rescue in CA, before he passed away. His life was disrupted again when wildfires in California displaced his new owners to Oregon. While they were able to temporarily board Jericho at a facility in Mulino, OR, neglectful conditions led them to reach out to an OGR board member. When we rescued him, he was thin, living in muddy squalor with no pasture or grazing area at all. Since arriving at OGR, he has received a specialized nutrition regimen to bolster his health and rehabilitative support. Now he is living out his days in a safe and healthy environment, galloping through our pastures. Expanding Our Reach OGR’s ambition is to significantly scale up its operations to rescue and rehabilitate twice the current number of animals. This includes plans to construct additional facilities and enhance our community outreach and disaster preparedness programs. We envision a future where every neglected or abused horse in the Pacific Northwest has a second chance at life. No More Bad Days Your donation would allow On Golden Rescue to: • Increase the number of rescue horses and goats that OGR is able to care for at our sanctuary, to 40 horses, miniature horses, donkeys and goats. The annual cost of rehabilitating, housing, feeding, and caring for a horse is $10,000. These additional funds will allows us to lease adjoining property where the additional facilities can be added. • Build two additional shelter facilities on our existing property. OGR’s property includes 4 existing shelter facilities, adding two more will enable us to house additional animals in need. The total cost of a shelter is $44,000. • Provide continuity of care for elder horses. As a sanctuary, OGR cares for the horses that we rescue for the rest of their lives. The cost of veterinary care increases as horses age and medical issues increase. A gift of $8,500 will guarantee the ability to provide quality veterinary care for a horse like Jericho, introduced below, for the next 5 years. • Expand disaster preparedness support to our community. OGR aims to increase our capacity to support community members with livestock and pets before and during disasters
