Mission Statement
Energy Peace Partners leverages energy and finance solutions to promote peace in the world's most fragile regions.
About This Cause
Energy Peace Partners (EPP) is a non-profit organization, with offices in the US and Kenya, built on the idea that renewable energy can serve as a building block for peace. The least electrified countries in the world are also among those at greatest risk of conflict and environmental impacts, but little renewable energy investment reaches the nearly one billion people in the countries most affected. Renewable energy offers new opportunities to support peace and stability, but unique barriers persist in fragile states. We tackle these challenges through the following programs: INNOVATIVE FINANCE: THE PEACE RENEWABLE ENERGY CREDIT (P-REC) We developed the P-REC to unlock new financing for new renewable energy projects in fragile, energy poor countries. P-RECs link international renewable energy markets with high-impact projects in fragile states. As access to affordable capital remains a challenge in these settings, P-RECs offer a new revenue stream to help finance projects. P-REC buyers include corporate leaders such as Microsoft, Google, and Block. These purchases have supported public street lighting, first-time electrification for underserved communities, and the electrification of hospitals. EPP is currently the authorized International REC (I-REC) country issuer in six countries - DRC, South Sudan, Chad, Somalia, Haiti and Ethiopia - and we will continue to extend this important clean energy finance mechanism to fragile states. Our newest solution - The P-REC Aggregation Facility - will scale up this market. MAKING THE CASE: RENEWABLE ENERGY AS A TOOL FOR PEACE Through our research and advocacy, we demonstrate the potential for renewable energy as a tool for peace building in fragile states. Together with the Stimson Center, we co-lead the Powering Peace initiative, which focuses on transitioning UN peacekeeping and humanitarian missions - which can be the largest energy consumers in their host country - from diesel generators to renewables, as an entry point for introducing renewables into fragile states. We’ve published pioneering research on this topic, including case studies on South Sudan, Somalia, Mali, and DRC, and the broader energy system in UN peacekeeping. PEACE IMPACT RESEARCH We have developed a new methodology, based on the Positive Peace framework and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators, to quantify the social impacts of renewable energy projects in fragile states, including their contribution to levels of peacefulness. The aim of this effort is to mobilize greater renewable energy investment in fragile, energy poor countries.
