About This Cause
Currently we have the following activities and benefits for the community: Youth Summer Leadership Camp -- this takes place during the Summer vacation as well as during out of school times such as Spring, Fall, and Christmas Breaks. The camp focuses on character education and integrity. Citizenship is a large part of the camp as we seek to help our young people develop social skills that will help them navigate life in a healthy way. We currently serve 19-25 children ages 7 - 15. Medical Clinic -- we have a free medical clinic that is on site due to a partnership with our Community Medical Clinic. This clinic is staffed by nurses once a week and sees patients by appointment or by walk-in. Recreation -- the grounds of the center are fully equipped with playground equipment, basketball, volleyball, and soccer equipment and is open to the public. The volleyball and soccer are currently under construction with the hopes of being open by our May Festival event on May 18. All of the equipment is onsite and ready to be installed. Emergency Shelter -- we are currently seeking funding to establish a community emergency shelter as we are in an area that is prone to hurricanes, tornados, and flooding. Our goal is to initially recruit 25 families to help them establish a family emergency plan complete with an emergency supply kit. We will stock the shelter with blankets, cots, food, water, diapers, and other supplies to help shelter up to 60 people during a disaster. Food Security -- we currently provide meals for the children in the camp-- breakfast and lunch. We also have no perishable food items onsite that are available to anyone in need. Our biggest challenge is operating expenses as it takes a lot of work to keep this funded and do the administration. We have received initial funding from our county government to help us to do needed repairs and to keep the electricity, water, internet, and most importantly our insurance in good standing. The county has also helped us to fund the first year of our Summer program and have agreed to fund year two. We are seeking to have multiple streams of funding as we look to rent space in our building to provide a sustainable income.
