Mission Statement
Adult DE is an organization that provides non-formal professional education through face-to-face interactions of: classes, lectures, laboratory experience, and field trips. Its curriculum covers the topics of food, exercise, and money education. The health mission of Adult DE is to promote healthy behavior that improves personal health and prevents chronic disease. The organization achieves this through ongoing promotional events that last 8-12 weeks and provides motivational strategies to encourage short-term and long-term behavior change. Redlining was a practice that created legal federal racially segregated covenants through zoning. A redline map in Phoenix, AZ once stated, 1) “This section is very ragged, occupied by Mexicans, Negroes and the low class of white people. There is no sale for property herein.” 2) For thirty years 98% of all FHA loans went to white people. Although redlining was outlawed 56 years ago by the Fair Housing Act, ratified on April 11, 1968 (coincidentally seven days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King), Its effects still linger today. Minorities and poor whites are often concentrated in former redline zones and low income communities in Phoenix AZ. Adult DE is focused on providing education to individuals living in these communities. Adult DE has the potential to reduce crime rates and improve the quality of life for those living in former redline zones and low income communities in Phoenix AZ.
