Mission Statement
IWRC is a space of support and community for refugee and immigrant women. Our spheres of focus are: Adult Basic Education, Health Literacy, Workforce Preparation, Family Literacy and Community Building. Each sphere intersects greatly, and if these spheres are addressed for women, the benefits do not end there - the benefits ripple throughout their families and communities.
About This Cause
IWRC is a space of support and community for refugee and immigrant women. Our focus is on: Adult Basic Education, Health Literacy, Workforce Preparation, Family Literacy, and Community Building. IWRC’s Family Literacy programming also includes: workshops led by professionals on family related topics, monthly family day events, access to donated school supplies and craft supplies, and a lending library of children’s books and educational toys. IWRC works in partnerships and with volunteers in order to provide the wide range of services needed to integrate refugee women, and by extension their families, successfully and happily into their new American lives. The Adult Education programming includes: ESL classes, conversation classes, high school equivalency testing preparation, and one-on-one tutoring. The Health Literacy programming includes: workshops led by health-care professionals, yoga classes, mindfulness classes, field trips to clinics, one-on-one limited run counseling, and support groups by language. The Workforce Preparation programming includes: workshops regarding American workplace topics, goal-setting and planning with a transitions coordinator, warm hand-off referrals to school district and city college vocational programs, one-on-one interview practice and access to interview clothing. The Community Building programming includes: field trips to museums and galleries, outdoor adventures such as hiking and horseback riding, and social gatherings outdoors. We also provide personalized support services as needed. This safe space is important for women, to both receive and to share tools for momentum, success, and joy. We are based in Los Angeles and we host many in-person community building events. However, all of our educational programming is presented in a hybrid manner. Our classes, workshops, and one-on-one sessions can be attended in-person, synchronously streamed online, or watched online at a later date. This hybrid approach relieves issues of transportation, childcare, work scheduling, accessibility and more. Our aim is to present programming that is nimble and responsive to the lives of our participants, volunteers, and staff - in order to best serve one another.
