Mission Statement
Semicolon Society provides free mental health education to the community, with an emphasis on suicide prevention and support. By providing direct discussions and resources about mental health, Semicolon Society seeks to reduce the stigma in having critical conversations, increase awareness and understanding of mental health challenges, and reduce suicide in our community.
About This Cause
Semicolon Society provides free mental health education, events, resources, and presentations with a focus on suicide prevention. We are an all-female board led by Dr. Paula McCall, an Arizona licensed psychologist and nationally certified school psychologist with extensive experiences, training, and support in crisis and suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. Semicolon Society has an advisory council that meets monthly to plan and develop various events and community outreach; this council is unique in that it includes other mental health providers along with various other nonprofit representatives, adolescents, and community members of all ages and backgrounds. Semicolon Society provides the following to our community: * Free events open to all ages and backgrounds, each with a different topic related to mental health. This is referred to as the Community Hope Project series. Every event also includes some sort of experiential activity to build resiliency and connection; examples have included rock painting and yoga. Mental health providers are present at every event so as to encourage conversations about mental health, reduce stigma of talking to a mental health provider, and respond to crisis situations. * Tabling with extensive resources related to suicide prevention and support following a suicide, as well as local resources that accept insurance and have availability. * Large scale events including Suicide Prevention Day Vigil and Embracing Wellness, both of which connect people to resources and open up critical conversations. * Free community presentations on topics related to mental health. This has ranged from school presentations and community center presentations to students to lunch and learn types of events with businesses and organizations. Topics are tailored to the unique needs of the audience. * Collaboration with school districts to provide suicide prevention and postvention supports and education to parents. This includes organization and implementation of zoom conversations on how to support our youth in the immediate aftermath of a suicide in the community.
