Blue House Uganda is creating a childhood and opportunity for orphans and vulnerable children in rural Uganda
About This Cause
Blue House Uganda (BHU), sponsored by Hope Multipurpose, Inc. (HMI), is a home for orphans and vulnerable children in rural Uganda, Africa. The children, currently all girls, live in a safe family-like home with nutritious food, clothing, health care, mentoring, and support for education. Blue House Uganda's mission also supports vocational or university education for Blue House girls who have successfully finished their public education. BHU also supports schooling for select orphans, including boys, who live safely with relatives. Blue House Uganda has a vocational sewing school open to students from the local community. Blue House Uganda is a 501(c)(3) charity based in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a nonprofit Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Uganda, governed by Boards of Directors in both countries. The only paid staff is in Uganda providing direct care for the children and the Blue House. All other work is done by volunteers. The late Beatrice Garubanda, a Ugandan-American, founded HMI in 2003. In 2004 she converted an abandoned store into a home for 12 desperate orphans in her home town of Kazo, Uganda. She also secured 9 acres of land for future expansion and to help address the needs of orphans and the community. On that land in 2009, HMI built a new Blue House dormitory for up to 40 girls, with separate out buildings. We are accepting more orphans as funding permits. The staff and girls grow some of their own food on the grounds. A sewing school and poultry and piggery buildings have also been added, for income-generating projects. We seek to help the children grow in self esteem and self sufficiency and to develop a sense of family, community and purpose. The girls are encouraged to retain ties with extended family, stay in school and plan for independent living as they become adults. Blue House Uganda seeks to partner with others in both the US and Uganda – communities of faith, agencies, foundations, businesses, governments and individuals – to accomplish its goals.
