Mission Statement

The mission of the Hawai`i Forest Institute is to promote the health and productivity of Hawaii’s forests through forest restoration, educational programs, information dissemination, and support for scientific research.

About This Cause

The Hawai‘i Forest Institute’s (HFI) mission is to protect and perpetuate Hawaii’s forests through restoration, education, information dissemination, and support for scientific research. In 2019, we managed 276 acres of forest habitat; brought 12.5 additional acres of forest habitat under intensive management; benefited 8,087 people through forest stewardship activities and classroom and community event presentations; outplanted 3,210 seedlings; assisted the DLNR Division of Forestry & Wildlife with the Hawai’i Wood Utilization project; secured contributions for the Hawaii Forest Industry Association’s 2019 Hawaii’s Woodshow; and helped coordinate the 2019 Hawai‘i Bird Conservation Marathon, which benefited the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center Discovery Forest. HFI manages 10 major conservation, education or research projects including the Ka‘ūpūlehu Dryland Forest, the La‘i‘Ōpua Dryland Habitat Preserve, the Honolulu Zoo Children’s Discovery Forest, the Pana‘ewa Zoo Discovery Forest, the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center Discovery Forest, the Pālamanui Dry Forest Preserve, and the Christmas Tree Demonstration Project. In 2020, we are continuing work on these projects, while seeking new projects that would allow us to scale-up our efforts, specifically increasing the number of acres restored as well as the number of people reached.
