Mission Statement

The Diabetes Research Connection's mission is to connect donors with early-career scientists enabling them to perform peer-reviewed, novel research designed to prevent and cure Type 1 diabetes, minimize its complications and improve the quality of life for those living with the disease.

About This Cause

Diabetes Research Connection (DRC) is a San Diego-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to funding innovative, peer-reviewed research by early-career scientists focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D). Our mission is to prevent and cure T1D, minimize its complications, and improve the quality of life for those living with the disease—by backing the bold ideas of the next generation of researchers. More than 1.4 million Americans are currently living with T1D, and that number continues to rise. Despite its impact, less than 3% of funding for diabetes research supports early-career scientists. DRC bridges this gap by providing up to $50,000 per project to support cutting-edge research from promising investigators who are often overlooked by traditional funding pathways. Our rigorous peer-review process is led by a Scientific Review Committee of 80+ top diabetes experts from across the U.S. Each research proposal is evaluated for innovation, scientific value, and feasibility. Approved projects are posted on our website for donor support and funding, and researchers provide ongoing updates to ensure transparency and measurable outcomes. Since 2015, DRC has funded over 50 research projects, distributing more than $2 million in direct support. Several of our funded scientists have gone on to secure major NIH and JDRF grants, helping scale their findings and bring new hope to millions of people impacted by T1D. 100% of every research-designated dollar goes directly to the lab. We’re committed to full transparency—each researcher shares progress updates throughout the life of their project and posts final outcomes on our platform so donors can see the direct impact of their contributions. Together, we can change the future of diabetes—one discovery at a time.
