Mission Statement

To increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.

About This Cause

Founded in 1975, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the United States. With more than 24,000 members and more than 600 chapters in the U.S. and abroad, NSBE supports and promotes the aspirations of pre-collegiate and collegiate students, and technical professionals in Engineering and Technology. The Chicago Professionals chapter of NSBE has been dedicated to fulfilling the NSBE mission in the Chicagoland Community since 1989. Our award winning chapter continues to serve on every level including K-12 Pre-College Initiative (PCI) students and families, collegiate students and professionals. The vision of our organization is to provide support, training and resources to every part of the STEM pipeline in Chicago, which includes: - Providing K-12 STEM academic assistance, technical training, mentorship and leadership training; - Providing support to over 400 engineering students at local universities; - Providing career, technical and leadership assistance to engineering professionals; - Providing STEM programs, resources, academic and technical support to our community partners, some of which include ACT-SO, West Side Forward, mHUB, SHPE, SWE, 100 Black Men of Chicago, and the Museum of Science and Industry. At the core of our service is our programs. We host a variety of activities throughout the year covering K-12 STEM programming, professional development, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, college preparedness and career readiness. Some of these programs include: Brogrammers/Develop(h)ers This program is a coding and leadership training program for students of ages 12-18 formed in partnership with the 100 Black Men of Chicago. The program runs every Saturday from 2 - 6 pm from early September until May. In its inaugural year, the Brogrammers built two (2) FTC robots, placed 13th overall in the Chicagoland area, and was chosen by lottery to participate in the First Robotics World Championships. Some of the program's supporters include Microsoft, Apple, and First Robotics. Engineers Week Expo For the past nine years, we have provided a rich, interactive experience for over 300 K-12th grade students during one of our award-winning programs, The Engineers Week Expo. Some workshops include Future World Buildings, the Chemical Engineering of Ice Cream, and Electromagnetic Swings. 15 companies and organizations came out to support the event and we awarded $1,500 in college scholarships. Some of the programs supporters include Baxter, UL, and Google. In addition to our programs, we have begun the process of demystifying STEM in the community through The Experience project. The world is changing. The way we communicate, the way we move, the way we entertain ourselves, and the way we think have all drastically changed in the past few months and years. The change has happened in large part due to the advancements in STEM. Yet, in our urban neighborhoods, quite a bit is still the same. Living conditions are the same or worse, STEM education has made little gains, and the income in our inner-city communities has shown little to no progress. The Chicago NSBE Professionals are excited to offer a solution that will assist in helping our community take part in the positive changes taking place in the world. Our solution is to demystify Science, Math, Engineering and Technology (STEM) development and research by providing an immersive community experience with STEM as the focal theme, all sitting on the landscape of a net-positive design masterpiece. Through innovative programming, creative events, educational richness, community involvement and corporate partnerships, we will engineer a place where creative imagination and technical know-how come to life, and a place where a community discovers the innovation inside of them, by mixing STEM with culture and heritage. Changing the narrative of the complexities of STEM is the goal and The Experience will be at the core of the solution. This is just a small sample of services and programs that we provide and have provided to the Chicago Metropolitan area for the past 32 years. We are excited to continue to serve!
