Mission Statement

Advocating for the right of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families to live, learn, work, and play in the community, improving the lives of us all.

About This Cause

We are a nonprofit organization run by knowledgeable professionals in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) actively dismantling a legacy of exclusion and isolation. Everyone deserves to feel belonging and live lives of their choosing. Founded in 1936, The Arc of King County is the oldest non-profit organization serving individuals with IDD in the Greater Puget Sound area, and one of the oldest such organizations in the United States. We are the first resource for IDD in King County. We advocate and serve people with IDD and their families across the lifespan, helping them navigate and secure services and providing direct support. We run a community residential program and various outreach and advocacy programs targeting disability supports, education, civil rights, housing stability, healthy relationships, and more. In our community residential program, we provide up to 24/7 staffing for adults who require intensive support to live independently. The payoff is life in the community, on their terms. Our outreach and advocacy programs serve thousands through information and referral, individual and family support, public policy and issue education, and civic engagement support. We advise professionals including school and legislative staff and run disability is diversity training for organizations. We help individuals with disabilities and their families navigate complex systems to secure support. And we help families engage, inform, and influence those systems. The work we do is complex, requiring understanding of anti-discrimination law, disability supports, and how disability intersects with other identities. The most common conditions associated with IDD include autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and Fragile X, but there are dozens that fall under the umbrella. In general: Developmental disabilities are severe, chronic conditions that substantially affect three or more major life activities. They occur in childhood, are lifelong, and impact adaptive abilities and executive functioning. Intellectual disability is a type of developmental disability. The Arc’s vision is deeply personal for our staff and board. It affects us, our families, friends, and colleagues. Many of us have a developmental disability, or are a family member of someone with IDD. Governed by a volunteer board of directors, we work passionately to uphold our vision of a world where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities thrive as equal, valued, and active members of the community.
