About This Cause

THE FOUNDATION FOR INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING THROUGH STUDENTS (FIUTS) Local connections. Global community. FIUTS connects students with local and global communities through programs that build international awareness, cross-cultural communication, and informed leadership. Founded at the University of Washington in 1948, The Foundation for International Understanding Through Students (FIUTS) has been fostering goodwill and dialogue in the Puget Sound area for over half a century. FIUTS now works with young leaders from campuses across our region, connecting them with individuals and organizations that represent the diversity of the Pacific Northwest. FIUTS programs inspire dialogue and curiosity and build a community of people who believe in the power of friendship to enrich lives and inspire peace through friendship. FIUTS Programs: International Student Programs: From welcome events to drop-in language support to our calendar of 100+ programs each year, FIUTS supports and engages young people from around the world in exploration and cultural exchange. Student Leadership: More than 180 international and domestic students each year take part in leadership training and hands-on opportunities to practice group management, conflict resolution, public speaking, and other key leadership skills. Hosting Programs: Started in 1949, community hosting is the cornerstone of FIUTS programs. FIUTS matches incoming students with families and individuals in the community for short-term homestays, both overnight and day-time host experiences. These relationships often grow to become the key experience in a student’s time in the US, and many students and hosts enjoy holidays and other special occasions together, and form lifelong friendships. Student Services: The FIUTS office is a friendly, welcoming place where students turn for friendship, information, advice, and referrals on topics ranging from local restaurants to finding housing to legal concerns. Community Programs: The World to Work program connects students with opportunities to network and explore careers with local professionals. Partnership programs connect students with opportunities to share their culture and experiences through programs in partnership with local government and other organizations. FIUTS also produces several lectures, film-series, panels, discussions, and other events each year aimed at enhancing understanding and curiosity between students and others in our community. FIUTS Student Board: In addition to a traditional Board of Trustees, FIUTS has an 18-member Student Board made up of current graduate and undergraduate students. Student Board members receive extensive leadership and community service experience. Visiting Programs: FIUTS partners with overseas institutions and the U.S. Department of state to welcome groups of young leaders from across the globe to Seattle for short-term programs exploring intercultural leadership, diversity, cross-cultural communication, civic engagement, practical English, and specialized topics. Education Outreach: FIUTS promotes global understanding through K-12 education outreach programs. The FIUTS pen-pal program matches international students with classrooms for one on one exchange, and the Classroom Ambassador program brings a group of students to a school for cultural presentations, language exchanges, or other special events. FIUTS CulturalFest: CulturalFest is a celebration of the diversity and vitality international students bring to our region. CulturalFest includes 10 performing groups representing countries around the world, along with 35 informational displays, where visitors can learn about other parts of the world and meet students interested in sharing their cultures and traditions. Wednesday Lunch: FIUTS Wednesday Lunch is a thirty-year tradition. At Wednesday Lunch, FIUTS provides a casual environment and a free lunch on the UW campus to anyone who wishes to attend. Wednesday Lunch is held each month during the academic year, and attendance ranges from 200-400 guests. Students (both international and domestic), faculty and staff, FIUTS alumni, local school groups, and community members come together for this important community gathering.
