Mission Statement
Seattle's only free art museum.
About This Cause
In 1940, Seattle philanthropists and contemporary art supporters Charles and Emma Frye gifted a collection of 232 exemplary European paintings to the people of Seattle with the mandate that access to the collection always be free. Since opening its doors to the public in 1952, the Frye Art Museum has endeavored to transform individuals and communities through free, accessible, and exceptional experiences of art. Located in the heart of the city, the Museum is a free cultural resource that serves 100,000 visitors annually, representing the full spectrum of Seattle's demographic and economic diversity. In conjunction with the presentation of 8 to 10 nationally and internationally recognized historical and contemporary art exhibitions each year, we offer and host over 600 free public programs each year, including our popular art history lecture series, film screenings, performances, gallery talks, and targeted education programs serving over 25,000 lifelong learners annually. Our arts engagement and education programs support our mission of being civically engaged, promoting artistic inquiry, and offering a rich visitor experience. The Frye Art Museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, and we enjoy a positive reputation in the arts community, both locally and nationally. We have a 65-year track record of providing free access to high-quality art and arts engagement programs for both youth and adults The Charles and Emma Frye Free Public Art Museum is a 501(c)(3) private operating foundation, organized as a charitable non-profit corporation in Washington State.
