Mission Statement
Pacific Science Center ignites curiosity in every child and fuels a passion for discovery, experimentation, and critical thinking in all of us.
About This Cause
Pacific Science Center began as the United States Science Pavilion during the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. Millions came to explore the wonders of science, and upon closing ceremonies, the Science Pavilion was given new life as the private not-for-profit Pacific Science Center. This marked the first U.S. museum founded as a science and technology center. Today, Pacific Science Center brings science to life and this year (2022), we are celebrating our 60th birthday! We continue to ignite curiosity in people of all ages and inspire creative thinking to fuel tomorrow's innovations. Our interactive programs reach nearly one million people annually in the community, classroom, and on our campus. One of our top priorities is to expand science education access for all and we can accomplish this is by alleviating financial barriers for underserved audiences who have not historically been engaged in hands-on science education. Despite our pandemic-related closure to the public two years ago, we have increased our community’s access to science education by offering Virtual Field Trips to students statewide and free digital learning resources for all. PacSci had more than 496,000 visits to our Curiosity at Home digital activities in 2021! And 28,000+ students participated in our Virtual Field Trips in 2021, including 58% from Title I schools across Washington that receive deep program discounts! Now that we have reopened our campus as of July 1st, 2022, we are thrilled to bring back the enriching exhibits and programs that Seattle and the greater public truly love. As we re-open we stand firm in our commitment to increasing access to science education with programs like our $19 Family Access and Youth Access Membership program for families receiving public assistance and unhoused youth. We are also proud to relaunch our Science on Wheels program this October 2022, our flagship education outreach program that brings PacSci educators to K-8 classrooms across the state with interactive workshops, live science shows, and portable exhibits that build curiosity and excitement for STEM learning. This year, Science on Wheels will visit 70,000 students, more than half of whom attend Title I schools that participate at low/no cost. With your help, PacSci can offer these Science on Wheels experiences to Title I schools free of charge so students from diverse backgrounds across Washington can get hands-on with STEM exploration. During Science in the City Lectures, Pacific Science Center opens its doors for public conversations about current science topics and the latest research from leading organizations on subjects impacting our community. Everything from polar science to NASA space exploration to COVID vaccine trials in children! Thanks to the support of donors, we are proud to offer most Science in the City events complimentary to the general public. It is only with the continued support from donors like you that we can offer these STEM-based experiences that ignite curiosity in all members of our community. Here’s some examples of how we can put your gift to work today: - $25: Stocks our Tinker Tank for hours of exploration and supports PacSci’s hands-on exhibits - $100: Keeps PacSci virtual field trips free for high-poverty allocation schools across WA - $500+: Join our PacSci Igniters Donor Society and invest in the next generation of computer scientists, epidemiologists, and curious citizens! We are truly grateful for your generosity!
