Mission Statement
ArtsFund supports the arts through leadership, advocacy, and grantmaking in order to build a healthy, equitable, and creative Washington. ArtsFund's values: we believe arts and culture are a tool for social change; we believe in arts and culture as an economic driver that creates jobs and revitalizes communities through its interconnectedness with the entire Washington economy; we believe in promoting equity by centering those most impacted by systemic oppression, including Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities; we believe that communities benefit when youth and families are engaged in the arts; we believe that strong data, both quantitative and qualitative, can drive meaningful advocacy and change narratives; and we believe that the arts bring people together with different experiences and that convening is essential for healthy communities.
About This Cause
We envision a community with a dynamic and world-class arts and cultural sector where the arts are accessible to all and valued as a central and critical component to a healthy society. Investing in a wide range of the arts community, including large and small organizations across all disciplines, ArtsFund ensures broad access to diverse artistic, educational, and outreach programming. Because ticket sales only account for half of an arts organization’s operating budget, ArtsFund’s respected grants are vital to the health and sustainability of the region’s cultural sector. Since our founding in 1969, ArtsFund has distributed over $100 million to arts and culture organizations in Washington State. ArtsFund grants to nonprofit arts organizations frequently represent their largest source of unrestricted operating revenue. These dollars are vital to the health of the organizations. ArtsFund’s allocations process is thorough and transparent, a national model for funding arts organizations. The allocations committee, comprised of experts in nonprofit granting and the arts, looks at the organizations’ artistic, operational and fiscal management, governance, mission, and community impact. ArtsFund does more than provide grants: we engage with the arts community to bolster connections and share learning to strengthen the sector. Our leadership initiatives include convenings to expand the capacity of the cultural sector; Board Leadership Training, providing training and internships for current and future arts board members; and economic impact studies, which detail the significance of the arts and cultural industry as a regional economic driver. The sector provides arts education opportunities for children, young people, and adults, often in partnership with schools and community organizations. Arts and culture groups also invest in artistic opportunities and experiences for the underserved in our region, from incarcerated youth to populations with physical and mental disabilities. The arts are essential to our quality of life in Washington; they strengthen our community, engage us in living, and bring us together to celebrate our collective humanity. With one gift to ArtsFund, a donor can support the tapestry of arts and culture organizations that infuse our community with joy, connection, and meaning. Our society needs the arts more than ever, and the arts are stepping up to engage and heal all of our community across the spectrum. By giving to ArtsFund, donors are making an investment in the health and well-being of our region.
