Mission Statement
Joya Child & Family Development: We believe in the worth of every individual and their right to a meaningful life. Our purpose is to nurture the full potential of families and their children, from birth to three, with disabilities. We do this through a personalized, comprehensive program of assessment, therapy, education, and support.
About This Cause
Joya Child & Family Development (dba Spokane Guilds' School & Neuromuscular Center) is a non-profit organization. It was established in 1960 to provide respite care to families that had a child with a developmental disability or delay. In 1979, Joya became the first neuromuscular center in Washington east of the Cascades. Prior to 1979, families had to travel to Seattle for their child to receive a complete developmental assessment. Joya is now one of two neuromuscular centers in Eastern Washington, the other being in Yakima. Today, Joya is a comprehensive assessment and therapy center for children, birth to three, with developmental disabilities. The brain is quickly developing during this very early age, making this the optimal time to provide intervention therapies to maximize potential, in the least restrictive environment. Joya services include: medical evaluations, physical, occupational and speech/language therapies, special education, and access to a full family support center including pediatric nurses and social workers. Annually, Joya serves about 300 infants and toddlers with developmental delays and/or disabilities. Many of our students are diagnosed with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, cancer, autism and other syndromes or impairments that cause a disability such as spina bifida, hearing or visual impairment, and muscular dystrophy. Families can self-refer or be referred by a doctor or other medical professional. All services are provided without regard for ability to pay.
