DISCOVER YOUR NORTHWEST

SEATTLE, Washington, 98104-2853 United States

Mission Statement

Discover Your Northwest promotes the discovery of Northwest public lands, enriches the experience of visitors, and encourages stewardship of these special places today and for generations to come. We envision more residents and visitors as active stewards who understand and care for the unique natural and cultural heritage of Northwest public lands.

About This Cause

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit social enterprise based in Seattle, and are licensed to operate in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, and Montana. We passionately believe in the people-value of Northwest public lands and are dedicated to ensuring that our public lands are places of education, recreation, and inspiration for everyone. We are proud to be partners with the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, Army Corps of Engineers, City of Seattle Parks and Recreation, and Washington State Parks. We cultivate appreciation of Northwest public lands by operating on-site educational bookstores that provide visitors with high-quality books, educational toys, DVDs, and other items that enhance visitor understanding (visit our online store for some examples). We then use our sales proceeds to fund on-site events and programs, including state-of-the-art displays, free publications, speakers and performances, and habitat cleanup and restoration programs for volunteers of all social backgrounds. You can find us at a wide range of locations from urban and industrial to remote wilderness including Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Seattle, Mount Hood National Forest, and many more locations across the greater Northwest. We're getting involved in new projects all the time. One of our more popular projects is the Washington CoastSavers program, designed to empower concerned citizens to help remove marine debris from Washington's Pacific Coast. We also annually help host the well attended Mountain-to-Meadow 5K Fun Run and Half-Marathon at Lolo Pass Visitor Center along the Idaho-Montana border. Proceeds of this event are used to help visitors discover and appreciate the rich history and striking beauty of public lands around the visitor center. You may not have heard of us until recently, but we were founded in 1974 when we began our retail activities at a few select Northwest public lands locations. Over the years we have grown into an organization with educational sales operations serving locations across the greater region. If you've purchased a map or trail guide at Mount Rainier, Olympic, or other Northwest parks or forests during the last 3 decades, you've probably bought it from us! From our retail sales, we generate about $600,000 in educational funding for visitor programs, and for that we thank you!
