Mission Statement
Our MISSION is to promote school and life readiness by providing multicultural early learning services to children and families, especially those who need our services the most. We will respect and preserve each child and family’s individuality, cultural heritage, and home language. We will promote personal and social responsibility with integrity and love in an environment defined by social justice and peace.
About This Cause
DLEC is actively addressing inequity in educational opportunities among underserved children by providing a range of programs and services to Seattle's most vulnerable populations. In the 2022-23 program year, we served 1,119 children, and their families. Families in our programs represent the vibrant cultural and ethnic diversity of King County. For example, 29% of the families in our home visiting and education center programs are Asian, 28% Black or African American, 20% Hispanic/Latino, 8% White, 1% American Indian or Alaska Native, 13% Bi/multi-racial families and 1% other. More than 65% of our families speak a language other than English at home, and many caregivers speak multiple languages. Families across our programs speak over 28 different languages. Additionally, 38% of our families were single-parent households, 32 families were experiencing homelessness, and 3 children were in foster care. At least 36% of the families fall below the federal poverty level, with many at or below 30% Area Median Income (AMI) level. DLEC offers a comprehensive set of educational programs to promote school readiness and prepare families for success. We have a home visiting and socialization program for pregnant women, newborns, and infants, where home visitors provide prenatal health support, child development guidance, and parenting education. Additionally, DLEC operates 3 centers for children from infant to age 5, offering a high-quality multicultural curriculum that includes literacy, math, and social-emotional skills. We also facilitate a Play & Learn program in partnership with Childcare Resources and Seattle Public Library, offering fun and accessible activities that focus on school readiness. These Play & Learn groups are offered at no cost to families at 4 different locations (3 Seattle libraries and our Sand Point location) every week.
