Mission Statement

The Phinney Neighborhood Association builds, engages and supports our diverse community through programs, services and activities that connect neighbors and foster civic engagement.

About This Cause

The Phinney Neighborhood Association is a non-profit multi-service community organization located in north Seattle. Originally started with block grant funds, the PNA was founded in 1980 by area neighbors and is dedicated to improving the quality of life for residents of northwest Seattle. The mission of the PNA is to build community by providing and promoting programs, services and activities aimed at connecting neighbors and fostering civic involvement in our diverse community. Headquartered in a former elementary school, the PNA has developed an active community center that serves as the focus of Seattle’s Phinney/Greenwood neighborhoods but also offers a wide variety of programs and activities for the whole community, with particular emphasis on youth, families and education. Participation in the PNA’s programs is open to anyone. The PNA currently has over 5,000 paid members, most of whom live in a geographic area in north Seattle bounded by Aurora and 15th Avenues, 45th and 105th Streets. We estimate, however, that the programs, events and activities held at the Phinney Neighborhood Center – and our four other sites – attract more than 400,000 visits a year from people throughout the Puget Sound region. Programs and activities have evolved and developed over the years based on community and member input and participation. Currently, PNA programs fall into three core areas: Youth Development: • Preschool Co-ops – The PNA offers three preschool co-ops for infants through five years olds. The Phinney Neighborhood Preschool Co-op, founded in 1981, is the largest independently operated preschool in north Seattle, serving just over 100 neighborhood families each year. The Ballard Preschool Co-op was developed in 2000 in part to deal with PNPC’s waiting list of families who were looking for a cooperative program for their young children. Ballard Preschool Co-op serves 85 neighborhood families. In 2010, Phinney Cooperativa Pre-escolar en Espanol was launched as the city’s only Spanish immersion co-operative preschool. PCPE offers two classes and serves 20 families. All three preschools also provide a resource and nucleus of support for families in the Phinney- Greenwood and surrounding neighborhoods • Before and After School - Whittier Kids! provides year round high quality, enrichment programming for children in grades kindergarten through six. Whittier Kids! also includes a preschool component. The program serves 300 families each year. Community Service: • Hot Meal Program In conjunction with St. John’s Lutheran Church and Crown Lutheran Church, this program serves 200-250 people each month, providing an evening meal every Monday and Tuesday and a noon meal every Wednesday. In 2012, the program served 22,000 meals. • Greenwood Senior Center provides programs and services for seniors that offer the opportunity to enhance their physical fitness, mental stimulation and emotional well-being and to support active seniors in their efforts to preserve traditions, embrace change and maintain independence. In 2012, GSC served 1500 seniors. • PNA Village Newly launched in January 2012, the PNA Village program is at the forefront of a new aging in place concept designed to create an elder friendly community. The Village is a membership-driven organization that, using both staff and volunteers, coordinates access to affordable services, including transportation, health and wellness programs, home repairs, social and educational activities, and other day-to-day needs, that enable individuals to remain active, independent and civically connected to their communities throughout the aging process. • Phinney Neighbors in Action, a service group of neighbors helping neighbors. Projects include weekend breakfasts for a local women’s overflow shelter , a fall school supply drive and an annual holiday giving tree that distributes at least 300 gifts annually to neighbors in need. • The Review, a community newspaper published four times a year and mailed to 15,000 households in the Phinney/Greenwood area. • Each year more than 30 PNA-sponsored outreach and fundraising events such as neighborhood potlucks, art shows, beer and wine tastings, an arts and crafts festival and a neighborhood wide garage sale day offer opportunities to entertain, educate and connect community members, forging links that help ensure the safety, quality and liveliness of our neighborhood. • As a resource to the community, the PNA provides meeting space for a wide variety of community groups from Little League to the Senior Center and also serves as a fiscal agent for many of these same civic and community grounds providing ongoing support in grant writing, organizational development and accounting. Arts and Education: • Well Home Program - home repair classes, a tool lending library, and referral service. As part of Project Impact, a public-private partnership designed to mitigate the effects of any potential earthquake, the Well Home Program also provides information, advice and referrals on residential retrofitting. • An Education Program that offers or provides space for over 80 regularly scheduled classes a month. • A Community Technology Center offers two public access computers, open lab time and a variety of computer related classes and workshops • Arts Program and art gallery designed to provide the community with a rich diversity of cultural experiences while supporting regional visual and performing artists. The Gallery hosts 10 shows/year, bringing 20-30 artists to the neighborhood. We collaborate and partner with a wide variety of organizations, from local churches and schools to other neighborhood organizations to both share and expand our resources and better serve the community. With the Seattle Folklore Society, we host weekly concerts and dances throughout the year. We partner with the Neighborhood Farmers Market Association on the Phinney Farmers Market. We provide space for two Zip Cars and a weekly Food Lifeline distribution site. In addition, we lease space to two childcare centers, a music teacher and a yoga studio and each year more than 250 individuals, groups and organizations host meetings, classes and events at the Phinney Neighborhood Center. The PNA employs 16 full time staff and an additional 55 part time employees but could not accomplish all of our work without the assistance of hundreds of volunteers. In 2012, 1011 volunteers donated 25,000 hours to strengthen and build our community.
