Mission Statement
We strengthen child welfare systems and connect children with healthy and safe relative, foster, and adoptive homes. Our Northwest Adoption Exchange (NWAE) has helped thousands of Northwest children find adoptive homes. Our photo and profile galleries showcase foster children in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. Featuring compelling photographs, and thoughtfully written profiles, this service provides the critical exposure needed to connect waiting children and families. We also conduct state-specific programs in Oregon and Washington. Our staff in Alaska and Oregon work with relative, foster, and adoptive families, in order to develop healthy and protective homes for abused and neglected children.
About This Cause
Northwest Resource Associates (NWRA) was created as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation in the State of Washington in 1980 as a vehicle through which carefully selected, well-organized teams of professionals could respond quickly and effectively to emerging issues in the child and family welfare field. We are successfully providing services in four western states (Alaska, Ida-ho, Oregon, and Washington), as well as nationally. NWRA’s Headquarters Office is in Seattle, Washington. We also have offices in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and Wasilla, Alaska, and in Portland, Oregon. NWRA has successfully accomplished over 100 major training, curriculum development, public policy, evaluation and research projects funded by grants and contracts from Federal and state governments, universities, foundations, national professional and voluntary associations, and non-profit organizations, as well as individual and corporate donors. In all of our programs and projects, we have consistently demonstrated a commitment to the highest standards of practice and quality assurance. And we have a reputation for delivering products on-time and within budget. NWRA is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of interested citizens and pro-fessionals who guide the overall direction of the organization. NWRA Executive Director, Robert Hunner, is responsible for implementing policy and administering day-to-day operations. Less than 10% of NWRA employees are in administrative roles – 90% or more of the agency’s annual income is dedicated to directly fulfilling our mission. • We emphasize a rapid response to emerging issues in areas such as special needs adop-tion, foster care, mental health and victim services, juvenile justice and homelessness. • We cultivate and establish productive alliances and partnerships with public and private agencies, units of government, community organizations and educational institutions. • We advance knowledge and understanding through sound research and evaluation. • We stress quality and excellence, teamwork, diversity, and community involvement as core organizational values. Our work falls generally into three program areas: Adoption and Foster Care; Program Evaluation; and Training. Historically, we have focused attention on the areas of special needs adoption, child abuse and neglect, out-of-home care, family-centered practice (family preservation and family reunification), services for the severe and chronic mentally ill (including homeless populations and mentally ill offenders), and services for victims of sexual abuse/assault. We deliver many of our services through program divisions, each of which serves specific client groups. The Alaska Center for Resource Families offers training and support to foster, adoptive and guardianship families. The Oregon Post Adoption Resource Center supports adoptive and guardianship families. The Northwest Adoption Exchange helps find adoptive families for children who live in foster care in the Pacific Northwest States.
