Mission Statement

DAWN protects men, women, and children survivors in South King County and beyond from domestic abuse, providing shelter, support and empowerment so they can build secure and happy lives. We lead our community toward the vision of a violence-free future by sharing our expertise and educating people to recognize, respond to, and prevent violence. Together, with the support of our generous donors and dedicated volunteers, we build a safer place to live for us all.

About DAWN • DAWN has been committed to providing culturally fluent services to survivors of domestic violence since 1980. • DAWN remains the ONLY domestic violence-specific agency located in south King County. • DAWN operates a 24-hour Advocacy & Crisis Line and provides confidential emergency domestic violence shelter and full-spectrum of survivor-centered services. • In 2019 DAWN provided 28,642 life-saving services to 1,219 unduplicated survivors. • Provided 9,242 safe shelter nights to 132 women and their children. • Provided 5,070 hours of advocacy based counseling to 9,701 duplicated survivors. • Answered 5,108 calls from the 24 hour Crisis Line. • Provided 1,202 hours in weekly support groups in both English and Spanish. About Domestic Violence: • Nationally and locally, nearly 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience domestic violence at some point in their lifetime. • In King County, the number one cause of homelessness for women and children is domestic violence, according to the King County.Gov website. • For 1 family in need of emergency, confidential shelter in King County, 57 are turned away. • 75% of women killed while leaving their abusers did not have access to domestic violence services.
