About This Cause

Zero Waste Washington catalyzes cutting-edge recycling and waste prevention policies and programs. We champion a responsible and comprehensive approach to the “stuff” we all use and the resources that go into making it. We are guided by a two-pronged strategy of working both at the statewide and community levels to create a healthier, safer Washington and more equitable access to sound, responsible recycling for all residents. Zero Waste Washington collaborates with community groups and individuals to inspire, catalyze, and develop innovative programs that move communities toward zero waste. We are currently focused on sharing as a way to prevent waste. As a result of Zero Waste Washington’s community organizing and support, a group of enthusiastic residents launched the Tacoma Tool Library. This sharing project is providing access to tools and workshops. Now, we are expanding this effort to help nurture Washington's Repair Economy so that people can easily repair, rent or reuse items. Zero Waste Washington is the public’s voice for strong zero waste policies. We are a leader in advocating for producer responsibility. With this approach, manufacturers are responsible for the products they make from cradle-to-cradle, including providing and paying for responsible recycling. A great example of producer responsibility is the successful E-Cycle Washington program, which provides free and convenient recycling of computers and televisions to residents, schools and small businesses. Recent policies we helped shape and pass include those for paint and mercury light bulbs. We also worked to help get styrofoam foodware and carry home plastic bags banned. Upcoming are efforts to revamp our recycling system and also to increase composting and reduce food waste.
