Mission Statement
Inspiring Conservation of our Marine Environment
About This Cause
Founded in 1977, the Seattle Aquarium serves as the largest marine science education platform in the Pacific Northwest, sparking joy, wonder and empathy in over 27 million visitors and bringing marine conservation education to over 2 million schoolchildren. The Aquarium cultivates a connection to - and empathy for - marine life in the Salish Sea and beyond. Our research, advocacy and environmental education programs place conservation, sustainability, empathy and scientific integrity at the core of every conversation. Our community programs provide learning opportunities in many settings. Guests can engage onsite with a volunteer interpreter, visit as part of a school program, or learn in nature through one of our public programs. Our Connections program provides opportunities to experience the Aquarium for those in our community who might otherwise face barriers to engaging with us. At the Aquarium, our veterinary teams monitor animal health daily, implementing and adhering to the customized care plans drafted for the 400-plus species in our care. Outside of our piers, our species recovery program puts our expertise in animal welfare, research, field conservation, ocean policy and social change to work to save species from extinction. Together, with dozens of partners, we're helping to recover endangered species both at home and around the world through carefully crafted programs that will breed, rear, and release endangered species to reestablish wild populations. We have joined with Puget Sound Restoration Fund to recover the pinto abalone in Washington, and we are a key participant in the multi-national collaborative initiative to re-establish the Indo-Pacific leopard shark in the Coral Triangle. Additionally, the Seattle Aquarium has launched the most ambitious campaign in our history to create the Ocean Pavilion, an iconic new center for ocean conservation, education and advocacy at the heart of Seattle's downtown waterfront. With a global focus on tropical species from the Coral Triangle in the Indo-Pacific, the Ocean Pavilion will complement the exhibits and education in our current building focused on Washington's waters. The Seattle Aquarium plans to exceed LEED energy and construction requirements for the Ocean Pavilion by participating in the Living Building Challenge, which aims to set a new regenerative standard for sustainable urban design. We will live our conservation mission by modeling advanced sustainable design in all our physical spaces, including our expanded campus in future campaign phases, demonstrating that even a technically complex campus like the Aquarium’s can be designed to give back more than it takes from our natural environment. Creating the Ocean Pavilion is the first phase of an organization-wide transformation that will inspire an ocean ethic—an ethos of care and action on behalf of marine life—in millions of people. Each person’s actions can make a difference in helping to heal our ocean—but when we come together, driven by a shared ocean ethic, we can transform the future.
