Creative Dance Center, a non-profit organization, provides brain-compatible quality dance education for people of all ages, infants through seniors. Kaleidoscope Dance Company, CDC’s performing company of young people, provides professional performance opportunities for children and, in so doing, provides quality dance performances accessible to people of all ages.
About This Cause
The Creative Dance Center provides professional development and personal enrichment through Educator/Community Workshops and the Summer Dance Institute for Teachers. Kaleidoscope Dance Company, CDC’s resident modern dance company, is made up of youth ages 7-16. Kaleidoscope performs locally, nationally, and internationally. Creative Dance Center School The Creative Dance Center offers high quality and affordable classes for infants through adults. Our curriculum includes Nurturing Baby, Parent-Child, and Pre-K Creative Dance and Creative Ballet classes, classes in Modern and Ballet for grades K and up, and Adult classes. The BrainDance is an integral part of the curriculum at CDC. We believe that students who experience dance in a joyful way will make it part of their lives. For the 2011-2012 fiscal year over $6,000 in financial aid and scholarships was shared with families enabling a diverse population to attend classes. CDC faculty are proud advocates for dance education, holding membership and leadership positions in organizations such as National Dance Education Organization, Dance and the Child, and Dance Educators Association of Washington. Summer Dance Institute for Teachers and Workshops The Summer Dance Institute for Teachers is now in its 19th year. Participants engage in the experiential and transformative power of Brain-Compatible Dance Education and the BrainDance. Institute participants of varied backgrounds and professions come to Seattle to study with Anne Green Gilbert and guest faculty. In 2012 fifty-five participants came from Hong Kong, South Korea, Sweden, Columbia, Canada, and from all over the US to study the teaching methods used at the Creative Dance Center. Over $2,000 was given in financial aid and scholarships to those who needed assistance in order to attend the Institute. Educator/Community Workshops offer professional development for those interested in best practices and the link between movement and the brain. Topics include Dance in Early Childhood, BrainDance, Sensory Processing, Moving in the Classroom, Teaching Dance/Fostering Creativity, and more. Kaleidoscope Dance Company Kaleidoscope Dance Company, CDC's own modern dance company since 1981, is made up of young people ages 7-16. Kaleidoscope has performed in Brazil, the Netherlands, Finland, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, Russia, Taiwan, and all over the US. Two major concerts are presented annually: Gift of Dance, a winter show featuring the children’s own choreography, and Kaleidoscope In Concert, a spring performance series showcasing professional choreography. The company also performs in the Puget Sound region bringing an educational, entertaining, and interactive concert to elementary schools. Kaleidoscope supports and nurtures the creativity of local and national choreographers by commissioning new works and ensures the future of dance by developing the choreographic skills of company dancers. Financial aid and scholarships are given to those families who may not otherwise have the ability to be a part of Kaleidoscope. In 2011-2012 over $4,800 was given so that children of all ages could benefit and share in the positive experiences of being a company member.
