About This Cause

Helping Hand House was established in 1984 in response to a challenge by a Puyallup minister to his congregation to help homeless families. A small group of volunteers pooled their own resources to rent a few apartments to use as temporary shelters, and soon discovered the need for homeless services for families was far greater than expected. We serve families with minor children that are homeless and have incomes at or below 30% of the Area Median Income (e.g., $21,050 per year for a family of four), primarily in rural eastern Pierce County towns where service-enriched housing programs are not otherwise readily available. We provide housing and mentoring to an average of 100 families per year, including 260 children. Services are tailored to the self-identified needs of each family and revolve around intensive case management focused on financial literacy, education, employment, life skills, and connecting clients to mainstream public assistance and benefit programs. Helping Hand House is governed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors that is responsible for fiscal management and operations oversight of the organization. Helping Hand House has received numerous awards, including the 2013 and 2011 Non-Profit of the Year (Puyallup-Sumner Chamber of Commerce) 2011-12 Campaign of the Year (United Way Pierce County), 2010 Silver Anniversary Award (Northwest Children’s Fund), 2008 Systems Change Achievement Award (Pierce County), and 2007 Non-Profit Excellence Award (Non-Profit Center of Pierce County).
