Mission Statement
To enhance the quality of life in Southwest Washington by providing symphony music of the highest caliber in live performances and through music education in schools, concert halls and throughout the community.
About This Cause
In 1978, Walt Cleland met with five string musicians who later combined with players from the Vancouver Community Orchestra to become the Vancouver Symphonette - which was later renamed the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO). Cleland served as conductor from 1978 to 1990. The VSO first performed at the Columbia Arts Center, but since 1999 has performed in Skyview High School's concert hall. After the 1990 retirement of Mr. Cleland, a Portland State University professor, Dr. Salvador Brotons, was chosen to lead the orchestra. He has built it into a highly-regarded, professional orchestra with more than 70 core musicians and an ever-increasing audience. The 2023-2024 season marked Maestro Brotons' 33rd season with the VSO as Conductor and Music Director, and the orchestra's 45th season. A resident of Barcelona, Spain, Dr. Brotons returns each season to lead the VSO and inspire the audience with his enthusiasm and expertise. In addition to providing world-renowned symphonic, chamber, pops and jazz concerts with internationally acclaimed guest artists, the VSO has become an educational cornerstone of the community. The Symphony presents annual educational concerts for children in area schools, and at senior living communities. As a citizen of Clark County and one of its main educational institutions, it is paramount for the VSO to inspire children and families to move towards a path of knowledge and education. The VSO has a unique opportunity to lead significant social change through community-building music education programs. In 2023, the VSO, in partnership with the City of Vancouver, presented the inaugural Vancouver USA Arts & Music Festival. This free, three-day festival welcomed 30,000 attendees to enjoy free visual art and musical performances, which culminated each day in a performance by the VSO. The festival, in combination with the VSO's performance and educational programming, play a fundamental role in enhancing the cultural vibrancy of our community. We thank our generous donors for continuing the legacy of music in our community.
