About This Cause

Contact us, for hands-on education to assure your child's car seat is properly installed. The Coalition is the independent source of information about car seats and booster seats. We are partners in safety with you and your child. Our staff and board of directors are all volunteers. For more than 33 years, we have collaborated with parents, caregivers, law enforcement, emergency medical services, government, health and safety agencies, and advocates to facilitate awareness, education and to create programs designed to help reduce the economic costs and needless tragedy resulting from motor vehicle crashes. The Washington State Safety Restraint Coalition (WSSRC) was founded in 1985 to coordinate grassroots efforts to support passage of a seat belt law. After that goal was achieved, the coalition turned its attention to supporting educational and related activities to promote seat belt and child restraint (car seat) use. The IRS designates us as a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Over time we've became Washington’s independent authority on child passenger safety and play an essential role in promoting correct use of child restraints, air bags and seat belts for vehicle occupants. Our stakeholders are not only the children, their parents and grandparents, but anyone who transports children. Washington currently has a very high level of child restraint use, thanks in large measure to the work of the WSSRC in collaboration with the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, law enforcement agencies, media, and the hard-working child passenger safety advocates throughout the state. Our Mission: To save lives and reduce unintentional injuries related to motor vehicles. WSSRC was involved in the passage of Washington’s original seat belt law in 1986 and was instrumental in advocating for improvements to Washington’s child restraint law. The most recent changes to our law took effect in June 2007 and require all children to be transported in a child restraint until the child is eight years old, unless the child is four feet nine inches or taller. The enactment and enforcement of these laws have been the most effective factor in increasing restraint use. In 1992, Kathryn Kruger, the Executive Director 1986-2017, received the Governor’s Excellence in Traffic Safety Award for “Lifetime Achievement” on behalf of the WSSRC.
