Mission Statement

SPSC promotes healthy aging in our community by creating a space of belonging that includes positive and culturally relevant opportunities for active living through nutritious meals, social services, physical well-being, lifelong learning, and social engagement.

About This Cause

Every day, hundreds of immigrant and refugee seniors in King County face barriers to food security, health care, and social inclusion. At SPSC, we meet these challenges head-on by annually serving over 10,300 culturally tailored meals, providing 1,900 points of social service support, and facilitating 470 hours of enrichment activities. Founded in 1985, SPSC has adapted and responded to the urgent needs of seniors, delivering 600 weekly meals during the pandemic, hiring multilingual social service navigators, and launching a medical access program. At the same time, we have created a safe, welcoming, diverse, and inclusive community that draws seniors from across 53 Zip codes to our senior center located in the south Seattle neighborhood of South Park. SPSC is a vibrant place for community to gather and culture to be celebrated. Our Seniors gather to enjoy culturally-relevant meals, and participate in singing, dancing, exercise classes, specialized wellness programming, and cultural celebrations. Many of our Seniors are living vulnerable lives - SPSC is also a place where they can receive social service support including housing, medical, and food, available in multiple languages including Vietnamese, Khmer, Spanish, and English. SPSC is deeply immersed in the South Park community; we strive to bridge gaps in services, meet overlooked community needs, and grow aspects of equity and inclusion. Our Board and Staff actively reflect the community we serve - 76% of our Team are People of Color and/or Seniors themselves, speak multiple languages, and 58% live in the South Park neighborhood. Our actively-engaged Seniors lend significantly to the overall well-being of our participants and the strength of our programming. Our Senior Leaders provide the vital link between the Seniors and the leadership at SPSC responsible for implementing meaningful and relevant programming and services.
