Mission Statement
Discovery Learning Center continues Discovery Montessori School, founded 1983 in the Queen Anne Hill area of Seattle and settled into the Magnolia neighborhood since 1986. The Children's House serves about 50 families each school year and their children who may attend for 3 years. Families from many Seattle neighborhoods come together in support of an enriched early childhood experience. We provide the educational foundation for a lifetime of learning. Montessori education opens many doors of learning and serves the individual interests of each student. Discovery grows through the participation of children and families. The organization funds teacher education and supports parents to become the advocates their children need in lifelong learning. We enhance our program with outdoor education, music and creative arts. Graduates may attend our Summer K class and during the 1st year of the pandemic we added a Learning Center for K-1. Students who have started their journey with us attend all local public schools and many private schools, including Montessori elementary. Children who begin self-direction in their learning are also likely to make choices in their education, volunteering, and work opportunities that are aligned with their deepest passion. Parents who gain insights about a child's journey become better advocates for their education options.
About This Cause
Discovery Learning Center was founded to provide a comprehensive education program in a Montessori school environment for a community of families with children in pre-primary classrooms. School events, parent education, meetings, teacher education and development are scheduled and attended annually. Teaching staff are members of Pacific NW Montessori Association and have member benefits including events for professional development. The center is fully licensed and participates in the WA State Early Achievers program earning a rating of excellence. The school director is an active board member of PNMA connecting Montessori communities and advocating in WA state. School personnel help families learn about a child's development and progress and become effective advocates for excellent education and make choices beneficial to a child's future educational success. The community is welcome to attend our Open House events and schedule school visits to observe the program. The School Director is supported in efforts to reach out into the community and to engage in work groups to support early childhood education. Classes meet Monday to Friday for a 10 month school year and another 2 month summer session. Families may select full day or part time schedules. We are housed in the facility of the Magnolia United Methodist Church which contains 2 classrooms, 1 meeting room and direct access to the garden and play yard. Our location is across the street from the Public Library so our classes take a library walk once a week. Other outings for extending our learning include the Seattle Children's Theatre, the Pacific Science Center, Discovery Park and other local parks. Families may volunteer in many ways including outings, school events, family events and community service.
