Mission Statement
The Clearwater School is an independent school serving children age 4-19. The Clearwater School is part of an international network based on the Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts. Sudbury schools are run democratically, ensuring that each student’s voice is heard and valued. Children are trusted with the freedom and responsibility to direct their own education. Graduates move into their adult lives self-confident, articulate, resourceful and motivated. The Clearwater School also partners with and is the fiscal sponsor for Snohomish County Mutual Aid. With our partner we participate in building connections in the greater community. We began distributing material aid throughout our county during the COVID pandemic. We assist people in need of food, help with rent and utilities, and other needs as defined by the people in need. We aim to extend our experience of community within the school families to others in our greater community. We aim through this partnership to be of service. The Clearwater School also supports the Grief to Action project a unique approach to supporting BIPOC in process and moving through grief.
About This Cause
2021: The Clearwater School has joined with our community to provide Mutual Aid in partnership with Snohomish County Aid. 100% of donations received to Mutual Aid go towards helping people in our community meet their basic needs. At this time we are focused on food deliveries to individuals and families experiencing hardship and expect our offerings to expand as we form more connections in our community. We are also making our setting available to community groups for meetings and activities after school hours as an extention of the important work we are doing in education and extending equal rights to children. Donations can be directed to our community fund and will help us build a new community meeting space in the place of an existing building that needs restoration. Education at The Clearwater School is based on developing personal responsibility for one's life. Students of all ages have the freedom to pursue their passions and the responsibility to support the community as a whole. With this freedom, learning is limitless. Clearwater students explore the world guided by their own interests, moving at their own pace. Free to think about who they are and how to spend their time, they play, talk openly with friends, investigate the world and dream. Students draw from staff and resources, as well as the offerings of the local community. Without grades, groupings by age or mandatory tests, children engage wholeheartedly in their passions—discovering for themselves their place in the world. During their time at Clearwater, kids make the rules, decide how and what to learn, hire (and fire) staff and choose how to spend their time. Students spend years setting and achieving personal goals—and in the process learn the true meaning of responsibility. Every day, students of all ages make decisions that affect their lives and community. Learning happens naturally, a result of debate, exploration, research and curiosity. Our students are adaptable, self-assured, thoughtful people with the skills that actually lead to success. At Clearwater, school isn’t practice, it’s real life.
