Mission Statement

Women & Children's Free Restaurant & Community Kitchen is a vital safety net that fills nutritional gaps for women and children in need while fostering dignity and respect, both within our restaurant and in the community.

About This Cause

Program Meals: Our flagship program launched in 1988 in the small basement of a local church. It was a way to provide women fleeing domestic violence with safe and dignified meal services. Our new location at 1408 N. Washington offers women and their children a full-service restaurant experience at no cost. When the pandemic hit, we pivoted our in-house services to curbside distribution of fresh groceries and family-sized meals. We planned to provide 100,000 meals in 2020 - by year's end, we provided over one million. Since the onset of the pandemic WCFR has provided 2.5 million meals in our community. Nutrition-to-Go: Through this unique program, we prepare and deliver nutrient-rich, communal and individually packaged meals to partner organizations. This service is offered at no cost to our partners - all food and financial donations to support this program are secured by WCFR. Collaboration allows our partners to do what they do best while we do what we do best. Current collaborations: Communities in Schools-Bemis & Shaw, Cup of Cool Water, Family Promise of Spokane, Feed Cheney, Home Yard Cottages, Millwood Impact, Miryam's House, Odyssey Youth Movement, Resource Center of Spokane, Ridpath Club Apartments, Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Inland Northwest, St. Margaret's Shelter, SANS-Spokane AIDS Network, Sisters Haven, Spokane County COVID Isolation Shelter, Vanessa Behan, and The Bridge Shelter. Nutrition Essentials (on hiatus due to COVID-19): We teach families to improve their physical and financial health through nutrition education, cooking skills, and ways to stretch limited food dollars. Nutrition Essentials is designed to equip women and children with knowledge and resources to help improve their overall health and reduce the risk of preventable diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. Pre pandemic, we offered weekly classes throughout the year for our adult women, and we provided Camp Stir Crazy for one week in the summer for kids ages 8-13. Students also receive recipes and fresh ingredients in each class.
