Mission Statement

Treehouse's mission is to give kids in foster care a childhood and a future. We envision – and strive to create – a world where every child that has experienced foster care has the opportunities and support they need to pursue their dreams and launch successfully into adulthood. Treehouse advances equity and racial justice in the foster care and education systems. Our goal is that by 2027, 90% of youth who have experienced foster care across Washington State will complete high school, with support and a plan to transition to independence.

About This Cause

Treehouse is Washington’s leading nonprofit organization addressing the unique needs of youth and young adults who have experienced foster care. Statewide only half of youth in foster care graduate from high school on time. Fractured support networks, disruptions from school and home placement changes, the lasting impact of trauma, and inadequate resources are all barriers to success in school. Treehouse addresses these challenges through a combination of wraparound direct services for youth and systems change initiatives. Treehouse meets basic needs and funds activities and experiences that lead to identity development, a sense of belonging, and healthy relationships. They provide individualized coaching, support, and advocacy for academic success and the transition to adult independence. Treehouse also advocates for policy changes and convenes cross-sector partnerships to drive positive outcomes and reduce racial disparities for youth and young adults who have experienced foster care. Treehouse Programs: Graduation Success - Treehouse Education Specialists work with youth in foster care, providing education planning, monitoring, coaching and support. Education Specialists build each youth’s investment in their future and keep them on track to graduate at the same rate as their peers, with support and a plan to launch successfully into adulthood. Graduation Success currently serves middle and high school students in foster care in Benton, Franklin, King, Pierce, Skagit, Spokane, Snohomish, Thurston and Whatcom counties. Launch Success - Youth who have experienced foster care often lack an adequate support network as they navigate the difficult transition into adulthood. Treehouse recognizes a high school diploma as a critical step, not a destination. Enter Launch Success. The post-high school program provides young people who have experienced foster care with continued support until they achieve stable housing, a degree or credential, and a living wage. Educational Advocacy - Treehouse Educational Advocates work with schools, social workers, caregivers and youth in foster care statewide to resolve difficult issues and remove barriers to school success. Students access education-related support services, make a smooth transition during school changes and minimize the effects of school discipline to keep them in school. Just in Time Funding - Research shows kids who are positively engaged in school and their community have better academic and life outcomes. Little Wishes pays for the important childhood experiences every child deserves. That includes access to extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs, music and dance, as well as summer camps. Kids gain confidence and have fun. Driver’s Assistance - Treehouse removes many transportation-related financial burdens for youth in foster care, including the cost of auto insurance and driver’s education. Driver’s Assistance is a statewide program that supports reliable transportation during and after high school, which is necessary as youth pursue academic and career opportunities. Holiday Magic - Makes the holidays brighter for children and youth in foster care throughout the state. Each year, Treehouse provides more than 5,000 wrapped gifts chosen by the youth or their caregiver. There are typically 40 different gifts available per year for various age groups. All gifts are brand new and mailed directly to caregivers. The Treehouse Store - A free store where youth in foster care and their caregivers can shop for high quality new and like-new clothing, shoes, school supplies, toys, books, free tickets to events and other essentials. Our store carries clothes for infants, children and teens in all sizes. We work closely with our community to ensure that items in the store reflect current trends, brands and fashions along with the basics every kid needs.
