Mission Statement
Through advocacy, education, and stewardship, Washington Water Trails Association protects and promotes public access to Washington waterways, shorelines, and marine trails for human-powered watercraft. With our efforts, we want to inspire current and future generations to enjoy and take a greater role in protecting our water ways, and ensuring public access.
About This Cause
WWTA is a non-profit organization whose members love to be on and near the water. It was begun in 1990 by a small group of human-powered boaters who realized that urbanization and privatization of Washington’s shorelines was limiting access to and rapidly changing the pristine nature of Washington’s waterways. These visionaries recognized the life-enriching, historically significant, and environmentally protective power of being on the water, and created WWTA to protect the public’s right to access our waterways for sustainable recreation and travel. Adopting a holistic approach, WWTA’s focus has been two-fold—to advocate for the right of public access to and from waterways and to steward the same waterways and adjoining shore lands, taking an active role in easing pressures by advocating for safe, legal day-use and overnight sites. Mission: to preserve and expand public access to marine shorelines, lake sides and inland riverbanks, while advocating, facilitating volunteers, and educating people about environmental stewardship through Leave No Trace principles.
