Mission Statement
Cocoon House's mission is to empower young people, families, and the community to break the cycle of homelessness through outreach, housing, and prevention.
About This Cause
Since 1991, Cocoon House has been the only organization in Snohomish County exclusively serving homeless and at-risk youth ages 12-24. Our continuum of outreach, housing and prevention services provide individualized supports and vital connections to resources for youth and young adults in Snohomish County including basic needs, emergency and long-term housing programs, wraparound services, and case management. Staff assist young people with accessing basic services and housing opportunities, health care, legal support, income resources, education, employment, and mental health and substance use disorder counseling and treatment. We strive to meet each young person where they are, and to support them on their journey to stability. Staff are trained extensively in trauma-informed care and strategies such as motivational interviewing to engage youth, build trust and create a welcome environment of safety and belonging. Core programming areas include: • The Outreach program includes both street outreach and a drop-in center for youth and young adults (ages 12-24), with the ultimate goal of helping them transition from the streets. Our Advocate team works with youth in the community to access basic needs items, housing resources, and connections to community services such as crisis response, health care, and legal support. Through mobile case management, our Human Trafficking team compliments these outreach efforts by supporting and helping to meet the unique needs of young people experiencing or at risk of trafficking. At our U-Turn drop-in center, young people can access basic needs items, showers/laundry, recreation, case management and community resources, as well a technology center and music recording studio. • Our low-barrier residential programs meet the immediate needs of at-risk and homeless youth (ages 12-24). Focusing on reunification, family counseling, and other prevention-based services, our short-term shelter works to meet the diverse needs of youth and families, strengthen families’ ability to meet future challenges, and mitigate risk factors for long-term homelessness. Our long-term housing programs focus on supporting youth and young adults to transition successfully to independence. Young people can receive therapeutic counseling, substance use disorder treatment, medical care, case management, and education/employment support while building resilience and skills for future success. • Youth homelessness results primarily from disruptive family issues. Working to resolve conflict is a critical and effective strategy for reducing and preventing youth homelessness. We provide a wide range of prevention services that address challenging family environments that often lead to youth becoming homeless. Classes, workshops, consultations, and family case management services help parents/guardians increase their understanding of their developing teen, and help build safe, structured environments for teens and families to thrive.
