Mission Statement
Our mission is to end gender-based violence (GBV) and promote equitable relationships through collective action for social change. Through this mission, we are boldly stating that ending gender-based violence is possible, and that to do so, we will have to work collectively to change the power structures and inequity that allow this violence to flourish.
About This Cause
Who We Are: The Coalition Ending Gender-Based Violence is proud to serve as the collective voice for over 40 community-based, culturally specific and/or BIPOC led organizations all working towards safe and just communities free from gender-based violence. The Coalition collaborates with our members, community leaders, public officials, and others working to end gender-based violence right here in King County. We are conveners, connectors, and builders. We weave gender-based violence analysis and values of equitable relationships across our community and we influence systems and institutions that impact survivors. Our Values: We value collaboration, self-determination, survivor perspectives, gender justice, racial justice, transparency and accountability. Our values are not static but active and help us create a team culture with integrity and a lot of heart! We are BIPOC and Queer led and majority of our board and staff identify as survivors of gender-based violence. We believe in a positive vision that together we can create safe and just communities where all people thrive. Gender-Based Violence in Our Community: Gender-based violence refers to acts of intimidation, coercion, and physical and sexual violence that are rooted in strict gender roles and inequities. Any time someone does not conform to what’s expected of their gender, they run the risk of being targets of violence. Roughly a quarter to half of King County residents will experience domestic violence or sexual assault in their lifetimes and gender-based violence is the number one cause of homelessness for women, children, and youth. When we think about the rippling effects this harm has on our communities, it becomes clear that gender-based violence affects all of us and that we each have a role to play in promoting equitable relationships and creating safe communities. Why We Need Your Support: Our collective voice is amplified by your support and funds that are unencumbered from the limitations that can come with grant funding, allow us to do our most innovative work to end gender-based violence. As our members face increasing demand for services in a time of decreasing resources and budget cuts, they are depending on us even more to keep them informed, connected, and to advocate on behalf of them and the thousands of women, children and men they help break free from violence and abuse. We want to lead, connect, and build better systems and supports for survivors. But the truth is, we can’t do any of it without your support. We need help from our community to keep us steady and stable for the long haul. We truly hope you’ll join us and stay connected in our work together! Our Work: Our small but mighty team works with member programs and at the intersections of various systems that impact victims and survivors. We build capacity through training and technical assistance, we connect providers across diverse fields, and we lead system change efforts in the following areas: Behavioral Health; Housing & Homelessness; Civil Legal System; Violence Prevention & Community Safety; Public Policy. Below are just a few ways that the Coalition's work has improved our community’s response to gender-based violence: • Improved the civil and criminal legal systems with tools such as our IPV Impact Assessment and family law toolkits, to increase resources, access, and education. • Provided over 1,000 professionals with cross disciplinary training to enhance the services they provide to survivors of abuse. • Produced the first King County Trans* Resource & Referral Guide as part of our LGBTQ Access Project with over 4,000 copies distributed directly to services providers across the county. • Coordinate access into safe and stable housing for survivors and bridge gaps in the housing system to ensure survivors will not have to choose between homelessness or staying in an abusive relationship. • Successfully advocated for increased public funding for a variety of services for victims and survivors. Our Membership: Our members span small culturally specific agencies that serve refugees and immigrants to larger mainstream agencies that have been supporting survivors for over 30 years. We are proud of the tremendous work that our diverse members are doing to serve survivors every day in our community. We’re here to support their efforts so that they have tools and resources to work more effectively. Here’s what they have to say about the Coalition: • “Working to end gender-based violence can be very isolating and dangerous. The Coalition creates a space where you feel you’re part of a safe, trusting community – and that allows for greater interaction.” • “When you work in direct service, it’s great to know that someone is working on the bigger issues because the system can easily bog you down. The Coalition is bringing people together and building relationships in the community.” • “The Coalition can negotiate on policies and funding for the entire victim services community. This pulls the community together and keeps us from having internal competition for dollars, making the overall pie larger.” Our Community Engagement: We are a member-based Coalition with decades of experience in the regional GBV landscape and with deep relationships and collaboration among our membership. For us, being in right relationship with community partners is especially important given that our entire area of work is in preventing and responding to relationships that have been fractured due to abuse of power and exploitation. Our History Founded in the 1980's, the Coalition improves responses to GBV through training and technical assistance, systems coordination, and policy advocacy and we focus our work at the local level. We are a regional leader and a central resource where government officials, service agencies, the media, and community members go for information on gender-based violence.
